Monday proved to be a successful day on and off the pitch for Sunderland as the Black Cats claimed a comfortable home win against Premier League rivals Burnley and added another eye-catching signing to their squad on the final day of the January transfer window.
The Stadium of Light played host to a game many believed would be a crucial relegation clash ahead of the season as Regis Le Bris’ side strolled to all three points against the Clarets thanks to two goals from summer signing Habib Diarra and a stunning strike from Chemsdine Talbi. That was enough to help Sunderland move into the top eight of the Premier League table and they will now turn their focus towards a tough-looking double header as they visit league leaders and title favourites Arsenal on Saturday before Liverpool travel to Wearside next Wednesday night.
Away from the pitch, Sunderland authorised a number of outgoing deals on the final day of the transfer window as Patrick Roberts’ loan move to Birmingham City was converted into a permanent switch, Adil Aouchiche joined German club Schalke and summer signing Simon Adingra agreed to spend the rest of the season with Ligue 1 side Monaco. There was one incoming deal and it was one that caught the eye as Sunderland agreed a deal to sign Anderlecht winger Nilson Angulo as the Ecuador international agreed to become the latest new addition to a Black Cats squad full of exciting attacking talent.

Speaking about his latest addition, Le Bris told The Echo: “I know him because we have worked with the recruitment structure on his profile. I think he is a strong, powerful tall winger with strong physical ability. He has this South American style of play as well, with the ability to be creative. He likes the one-v-one situations, he has this character. After that, he will probably need time to connect with his team-mates and the league, but you never know, sometimes it is really quick, sometimes it takes time. But we are really happy to have him.”
