Dejected players of Newcastle United during the Carabao Cup Semi Final Second Leg match between Manchester City and Newcastle United

Newcastle United's slim hopes of Wembley were extinguished by half-time as Man City took advantage of semi-final stage fright from the Magpies.

Newcastle went into the game knowing they needed a football miracle but the night started unravelling quickly for Howe's team. A frantic clearance from Dan Burn clattered off Omar Marmoush with the ball bouncing back off the City star and dropping into the net on seven minutes.

Marmoush doubled his tally on 29 minutes. Trafford rolled it out quickly and City attacked down the left-hand side before Antoine Semenyo's cross was looped into the air by a failed Trippier clearance and Marmoush pounced for his second.

[It was 3-0 on 32 minutes when Tijani Reijnders made a driving run through the middle before finding Semenyo.](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/man-city-vs-newcastle-live-33363102) The ex-Bournemouth man saw Burn knock the ball back into the path of the Dutchman who swept home a third on the night.

Newcastle pulled one back through a superb solo goal from Anthony Elanga as he danced around three defenders and slammed home to make it 3-1 on the night.

How Newcastle fared against Man City:

**Aaron Ramsdale 7**

Denied Erling Haaland twice in the second half. A busy night with a host of stops.

**Kieran Trippier 4**

Horror clearance allowed Reijnders in to score. Had problems but was not the main issue.

**Malick Thiaw 6**

Weighed in with an assist but suspect attempts to stop City sweeping through time and time again in the first half.

**Sven Botman 6**

Another who struggled early on. Almost pulled one back.

**Dan Burn 5**

A couple of errors in the first half. Battled hard to keep things respectable in the second half.

**Lewis Hall 7**

Newcastle's best player in the first half. Carried it forward with purpose and caused City some issues.

**Sandro Tonali 6**

Tried to keep his standards high. Looked for passes to open City up.

**Jacob Ramsey 6**

Showed some fight during a tough evening. Continues to show improvement in the middle.

**Joe Willock 4**

Squandered a big chance early on. Nodded on to play in Gordon who also failed to hit the target.

**Anthony Gordon 5**

Blew one big chance. Hobbled off before the break, clutching his hamstring.

**Nick Woltemade 2**

Zero service. Looking for passes that were never coming his way. Just 11 touches and no shots - devoid of confidence. Low mark not all down to him, but City needed to be bullied from the off.

**Subs**

**Harvey Barnes 8** **(for Gordon 44)**

Made a difference and gave Newcastle what they lacked in the first half - an outlet.

**Yoane Wissa 7 (for Woltemade 46)**

At least it looked like it was troubling the City defence by getting into threatening positions.

**Anthony Elanga 8 (for Willock 46)**

Scored a superb solo goal and refused to make life easy for Man City despite their comfortable lead.

**Jacob Murphy 7 (for Hall 46)**

Steadied things a little bit for Newcastle after the break.

**William Osula (for Trippier 76)**

**\*Subs must play 15 minutes to gain a mark**
