Man United and Liverpool are set to battle against each other for an England international.

Man United had a very quiet January transfer window, and it all leads up to a summer in which the Red Devils are expected to splash the cash. United are expected to spend big on a midfielder as their top priority signing, with several top-class Premier League stars linked.

The striker position has also been a long-term problem for United, as Michael Carrick has opted to play Bryan Mbeumo there out of position at the moment, so United could sign a striker in the summer, too.

Man United plot £110m raid on Crystal Palace

As mentioned, it isn’t clear which midfielder Man United are going to prioritise, but most would agree that if they went after Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, it would be a fantastic piece of business.

Wharton is expected to command a hefty fee of around £80m, but the England international is certainly worth it. The 21-year-old has made 74 appearances for Palace since joining from Blackburn in 2024. He has also been able to break into the England side, earning three caps so far.

According to the Mirror, Man United are set to battle against Liverpool to sign Wharton in the summer, as Arne Slot also wants to bring the young holding midfielder in to become the future spine of his team.

Mateta’s dream January move collapsed

Mateta was arguably the biggest story of the January transfer window, as a £30m deal was agreed to sell him to AC Milan, because he wanted to join a bigger club in an attempt to secure a spot in the French World Cup squad. However, his move broke down, as he failed his medical, despite Milan already being aware of an apparent injury.

The 28-year-old is now set to stay at Selhurst Park, and then likely leave in the summer, as Palace have already replaced him by signing Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen. It means that Man United have a chance to sign Mateta, likely for a cheap deal in what could be a great piece of business.

It is understood that the Palace star wants to play Champions League football, so if Carrick is able to lead United to a top four finish, they could sign both Wharton and Mateta to help transform their squad.
