The latest Newcastle United injury news ahead of their Premier League match against Brentford - including updates on Anthony Gordon.

Newcastle United’s increasingly lengthy list of injury concerns didn’t get any shorter following their EFL Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday night, with Anthony Gordon the last key player to pick up a new injury.

To make matters worse, Bruno Guimarães, Joelinton and in-form youngster Lewis Miley were all absent as well, giving Eddie Howe a major headache in midfield which may not ease before Newcastle face an impressive Brentford side at St. James’ Park on Saturday. With injuries at the back creating issues as well, no fewer than seven first-team players are currently out or doubts for that match.

With kick-off fast approaching, we’ve collected all of the latest Newcastle injury news below, including the expected return dates for all of the absentees when available.

How long will Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon be out for?

Just before half-time of Wednesday night’s match against Manchester City, winger Anthony Gordon pulled up off the ball when attempting to sprint on to a long Aaron Ramsdale pass – and appeared to signal that hid hamstring had gone.

Gordon was able to limp off the field under his own steam before being replaced by Harvey Barnes, but is likely to face a prolonged spell on the sidelines once tests have confirmed the extent of the damage.

Manager Howe simply told the media after the match that he “didn’t know the extent of it” but confirmed that it was Gordon’s hamstring which was the problem, suggesting that the winger is liable to miss some time for the club.

In the best case scenario, a Grade 1 strain, Gordon could be back in training within three weeks, although a Grade 3 tear, the worst case scenario, could put him out for the rest of the season. Howe is likely to provide an update during his pre-match press conference on Friday, but Gordon will almost certainly be unavailable to face Brentford.

Will Bruno Guimarães, Lewis Miley or Joelinton be fit to face Brentford?

Newcastle fans will be hoping to hear better news from Howe on the availability of midfielders Bruno Guimarães and Lewis Miley, both of whom have a chance of returning this weekend from their respective ankle and knee injuries.

Guimarães was said to be “doing well” ahead of the Manchester City game and Howe said that he had “a chance” to return against Brentford after missing the past four matches, while Miley – who has been unavailable for the last two games – could come back from a minor knee problem. Both remain doubts but stand every chance of playing some part.

Fellow midfielder Joelinton is considerably less likely to be involved. He sustained a groin injury during the recent match against Aston Villa – the Brazilian’s 250th appearance for the club – and while Howe has said that “his return could be quite quick” and a matter of “weeks not months” he is still expected to be sidelined for around another fortnight. The Champions League game against Qarabag on 18 February is considered a realistic target, but Howe could spring a surprise and bring him back more swiftly if his fitness permits.

Newcastle will also be without the services of three of their defenders – centre-half Fabian Schär is out until April after undergoing knee surgery, Tino Livramento is tentatively pencilled in from an early March return as he recovers from a hamstring problem, and fellow full-back Emil Krafth could be back in training later this month as he looks to rebuild his fitness following a knee injury, although Howe has told the media that no return date has been set as yet.
