Sunderland face Newcastle United in the Premier League on March 22nd.
Eddie Howe’s men were thwarted in their bid to defend the trophy after suffering a 5-1 aggregate defeat at the hands of Manchester City, with Pep Guardiola’s side securing a 3-1 second leg win at the Etihad Stadium to book their place in a Wembley final against Arsenal on March 22nd.
And now that the showpiece fixture and its participants have been confirmed, Sunderland know for certain that they will travel to St. James’ Park to face Newcastle United in the Premier League earlier that same day.
The Black Cats’ second derby showdown of the campaign had originally been pencilled in for the afternoon before - Saturday, March 21st - but was moved for live broadcast, with its amended date hinging on whether or not Newcastle would be making a trip to the capital.
In a statement released last month, Sunderland explained: “Sunderland AFC’s trip to Newcastle United in March has been rescheduled. The Tyne-Wear derby has been selected for live broadcast by Sky Sports and will now be played at 12:00 GMT on Sunday, 22 March. Supporters are advised that the fixture date remains subject to change due to Newcastle’s continued participation in the Carabao Cup.”
Elsewhere, the Black Cats’ away clash against Leeds United was also moved for television broadcast, and will now take place at 7.30pm on Tuesday, March 3rd, live on TNT Sports.
The news regarding these two Premier League fixtures comes off the back of a recent update confirming that Sunderland’s FA Cup fourth round clash with Oxford United has been rescheduled for broadcasting reasons too.
A statement from the club explained: “Details of Sunderland AFC’s trip to Oxford United in the Emirates FA Cup have been confirmed. The fourth round tie will take place on Sunday, 15 February 2026 at 14:00 GMT and be televised on discovery+.”
