Eddie Howe is facing his first major rocky patch as Newcastle United manager.

The pressure is beginning to mount on Eddie Howe at Newcastle United. For the first time in his Toon career, a section of fans - largely on social media - are questioning whether he is the man to lead the Magpies forward.

Newcastle crashed out of the Carabao Cup last night to Manchester City. In truth, the tie was over when Pep Guardiola’s men coasted to a 2-0 win at St James’ Park last month.

The Magpies had a puncher’s chance at the Etihad but that soon evaporated as Omar Marmoush scored after seven minutes. Man City added two more to kill the fixture by half-time.

Bookies slash Eddie Howe odds

Newcastle rallied in the second half - pulling one back through Anthony Elanga - but social media was filled with fury at the full-time whistle. Bookmakers have now slashed the odds on Howe to be the next Premier League manager on the chopping block.

Just weeks ago, the 48-year-old was priced at 40/1 to face the axe. However, the City setback has resulted in those odds slashing to as little as 11/2. Here is a list of the runners and riders in the sack race.

Thomas Frank - 11/10

Scott Parker - 10/3

Oliver Glasner - 9/4

Eddie Howe - 11/2

Arne Slot - 13/2

No manager to leave - 12/1

Eddie Howe on Manchester City defeat

Howe rued his side’s wastefulness in front of goal over the two legs. He told reporters: “We are frustrated we only scored one goal in two games. We don't feel we should have lost the first leg 2-0 on the balance of opportunities created.

“It could have been different but we accept the reality. The last thing you want to do is have to chase a game. We were going for the match, we were trying to attack."

Pep Guardiola makes bizarre Wembley claim

Guardiola bizarrely complained about the need to travel to Wembley for the Carabao Cup final. He said: "Newcastle are a Champions League team with top-class players. It was an incredibly intense game in all departments, but the guys were really good.

"In March, we go to Wembley again. We will travel to London again, and they [Arsenal] will wait for us there. They never travel to the north (for finals), but I am really happy to be back. Five ties in 10 years is a big milestone."
