Key relegation rivals make transfer decision on £28m ex-Leeds United star - Fabrizio Romano

A former Leeds United Championship star was the subject of January transfer interest.

Former Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville could be on the move again this summer amid reports West Ham knocked back two January transfer approaches.

Summerville swapped Leeds for West Ham in August 2024, joining the Hammers in a deal the YEP understands was worth £28million. The Dutchman registered 20 goals and 11 assists on his way to the 2023/24 Championship Player of the Season but struggled to make an impact in their eventual play-off final defeat to Southampton.

After a stop-start debut campaign in London, Summerville has enjoyed regular football under Nuno Espirito Santo and subsequently hit form. The 24-year-old has become a key player for Leeds’ main relegation rivals, scoring three goals in his last three Premier League appearances.

Reports emerged in January of interest in Summerville, namely from Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur, although a mid-season move away from the London Stadium never looked likely. That could change in the summer, however, with Fabrizio Romano providing an update on the winger.

In a post on X, he wrote: “West Ham rejected two approaches from Premier League and Serie A from [sic] Crysencio Summerville in January. Seen as untouchable for this season + player happy to stay and help West Ham but summer will be different. Expected to be one to watch in June with several clubs keen.”

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Summerville but West Ham will be desperate for him to stay fully committed and in form between now and May. The Dutchman’s influence has grown a lot in recent weeks with his goals helping earn back-to-back wins over Spurs and Sunderland.

The 18th-placed Hammers remain six points adrift of safety, with former club Leeds and Nottingham Forest level on 26 points and goal difference, separated by goals scored alone. Daniel Farke’s side welcome the Reds to Elland Road on Friday in a massive game, with the chance to pull nine clear before Summerville’s side travel to Burnley.

West Ham need Summerville amid Leeds United relegation scrap

Espirito Santo will hope his star attacker’s form can continue right up until West Ham’s final-day meeting with Leeds at the London Stadium. In his last season at Elland Road, Summerville wasn’t quite able to extend his goalscoring exploits right through a gruelling 49-game Championship campaign including play-offs.

Unfortunately for Leeds, Summerville’s late-season drop in form during the 2023/24 campaign coincided with their failure to achieve automatic promotion and eventual play-off defeat. The winger failed to register a goal or assist in 11 of his side’s final 14 regular-season matches and was part of a full team that struggled against Southampton at Wembley.

Summerville was the second major Elland Road exit in the summer of 2024, following £40m Spurs-bound Archie Gray into the Premier League. Two games into the 2024/25 campaign, Georginio Rutter then went to Brighton and Hove Albion after his £40m release clause was triggered just hours before its expiry.

Rutter’s Brighton are the only team of that trio who haven’t yet come to Elland Road. Gray’s Spurs won 2-1 in October while Summerville’s Hammers lost by the same scoreline later that month.
