Man Utd did not add to their squad in the 2026 winter transfer window but they could have if they really wanted to.

Manchester United turned down the chance to sign Wilfred Ndidi in the January transfer window as they did not want to pursue short-term additions to their squad.

United made it clear they had no interest in signing temporary fixes at a first team level and would only move for a player in the winter window if they were part of the club's long-term transfer plan. United contemplated adding another midfielder to their senior squad but ultimately decided there was little value when they already plan to refresh the position at the end of the season.

Ndidi, 29, currently plays for Turkish side Besiktas and is the captain of the Nigeria national team. He made 220 Premier League appearances during a previous spell with Leicester City and was part of the side that won the FA Cup and Community Shield back in 2021. It means United will play the rest of the season with the squad currently at their disposal as they go in search of Champions League qualification.

Romano reveals United rejected midfield move

Manchester United will eye a midfield refresh in the summer transfer window with two additions expected in the position. Manchester World revealed this week that Elliot Anderson is viewed as the dream addition, while the club also retain an interest in both Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton.

United are also keeping an eye on cheaper options to bolster their midfield, with Joao Gomes, Angelo Stiller and Alex Scott also believed to be of some interest to the club. Even if they move for a more cost-effective addition, United will only do so if they offer long-term value to the side.

Speaking this week, notorious transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano issued an update on United's plans last month, and revealed that they were formally offered the chance to sign Wilfred Ndidi.

“I can tell you that Wilfred Ndidi, former midfielder from Leicester, now at Besiktas, was offered as an opportunity to Man United," Romano told the Here We Go podcast. “A low-cost opportunity, the player was very keen on the move but Man United decided immediately not to proceed. They had the chance to do something like a low-cost opportunity but they decided against it.”
