Newcastle United latest news: The date and kick-off time for the Premier League clash between Newcastle United and Sunderland has been confirmed.
The Magpies headed to the Etihad Stadium with a mountain to climb following a 2-0 defeat in the first-leg on Tyneside. That mountain became unscalable when they conceded three times in the first-half to lose their grip on the Carabao Cup trophy they had held since March.
For Newcastle United, attention now turns to how they balance Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup action over the next month or so as they strive to ensure their campaign doesn’t completely derail following another defeat on the road. That schedule begins with a clash against Brentford in the league at St James’ Park on Saturday, before they face another match on the road against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night.
Newcastle United v Sunderland kick-off time & date confirmed
Newcastle United’s defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday night also confirmed that their Tyne-Wear derby clash against Sunderland will take place on Sunday 22 March. That game will kick-off at 12pm at St James’ Park and will be shown on TV in the United Kingdom by Sky Sports.
The match had initially been moved to that date in the last round of TV picks, but because the Carabao Cup final will also played on that Sunday, the Tyne-Wear derby could have been moved had Newcastle United triumphed over the Citizens.

Between now and then, though, the Magpies face a gruelling schedule that, unlike their visitors on that day, includes Champions League football. Newcastle United twice have to play Qarabag later this month and victory over two-legs against the Azerbaijani side would also mean they have the second-leg of a Champions League Round of 16 tie to play just days before their clash with the Black Cats.
If they do indeed defeat Qarabag, then their round of 16 game would see Newcastle United take on either Chelsea or Barcelona. The first-leg of that clash will be played at St James’ Park on the week of 10/11 March with the second-leg, either in London or Spain, to be played on the 17/18 March.
The Magpies faced a similar situation ahead of the reverse fixture at the Stadium of Light. Their opponents had the luxury of a week-long gap between fixtures, whilst the Magpies travelled to and from Germany in midweek for a clash with Bayer Leverkusen in the league phase.
Newcastle United v Sunderland ticket news
Newcastle United are yet to announce ticket information for their clash with Sunderland. That is expected to happen before the end of February.
Sunderland fans, meanwhile, will be given 2,528 tickets for next month’s game at St James’ Park. That allocation followed a reciprocal agreement between the two clubs that ensured the same amount of tickets were offered to each set of away supporters for both derby games.
