Napoli chief Leonardo Giammarioli has admitted that he is concerned that the club will be forced to cash in on Scott McTominay. The Scottish midfielder has thrived in Serie A since choosing to leave Manchester United in 2024.

He has made 69 appearances in all, scoring 22 times, while he also helped Napoli to the Serie A crown last term. There have been suggestions that he could leave the club now however, with former club United urged to re-sign him.

And Napoli’s global business development officer, Giammarioli, says he is worried about the club being powerless to turn down a lucrative bid. Speaking with talkSPORT, he said: “Yeah, of course I’m worried.

“But ultimately, especially Scott, who’s a very nice guy, we’re happy if he gets to the next level in a couple of years – maybe not now, maybe not next year, but he deserves it.

“Look at Stuttgart, they wanted to keep Nick Woltemade, but when such an offer comes in, there’s not much you can do, when the player wants to go and money is important.”

He added: “It’s a bit complicated for Serie A and our competitive clubs…the league is still making losses in revenue. Of course, it’s hard to keep up with the other big four leagues, but we’re trying to improve and be competitive.

“Keeping players is difficult, it wasn’t easy to get them, it’s even harder to keep them. We need to be smart about our signings…every bit of money we spend must count.”

Among those to have urged United to make a move for McTominay is former star Teddy Sheringham. He recently suggested that the Red Devils simply cannot allow the midfielder to sign for another Premier League side.

He said: "If he comes back to England, then there's no way Manchester United can miss out on him. He simply cannot come back to the Premier League without going to Manchester United. That would be a travesty. That cannot happen."

Napoli and McTominay will be back in action this weekend as they travel to Genoa. The reigning Serie A champions currently sit nine points off the pace in the race for this season’s title.

It has been suggested that they could yet tempt another former Premier League player to move to Naples. Reports have suggested that Napoli are in talks over a move for Raheem Sterling following his exit from Chelsea.
