Contact made: Man Utd now in talks to sign young midfielder dubbed the next Carrick

Manchester United have now reportedly opened talks to sign a big-money midfield star, who's been compared to current interim boss Michael Carrick.

It wasn't a major surprise that Man United chose not to welcome any reinforcements in the January transfer window. The focus, instead, was all about their managerial situation as Ruben Amorim was given his marching orders and Carrick arrived as interim boss.

He knows Carrick well...

Since then, it's as if the last year of misery never existed. Carrick has got the Red Devils firing on all cylinders, no matter the opponent. He has won three games from three in the Premier League against rivals Manchester City, champions-elect Arsenal and a Fulham side who are certainly no pushovers.

The way in which he has secured those victories has been like the Man United of old. The Red Devils have been electric going forward, hitting sides on the counter in a way that only Old Trafford could pay witness to once upon a time.

Now that the standards have once again been raised at Man United, INEOS have the chance to take a step in the right direction when the summer transfer window arrives.

It's then that they could bring an end to Carrick's interim spell in favour of a permanent manager. Of course, there's still a chance that it could be the interim boss, himself, but United may yet be scarred by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's permanent tenure a few years ago.

Instead, names like Thomas Tuchel and Oliver Glasner could emerge, with the latter potentially bringing Adam Wharton with him to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils could look inside the Premier League in search of a new manager.

According to reports in Spain, Man United have opened preliminary talks to sign Wharton, with those in South London setting a hefty price-tag of €95m (£82m).

Man Utd should go all out for Wharton

£82m is a steep price-tag and would be one of the club's record transfers, there's no escaping that. But that is the modern market and Man United should bite the bullet and welcome the perfect partner for Kobbie Mainoo at the heart of their midfield.

Wharton is certainly rated across the Premier League and Old Trafford, given the praise that Rio Ferdinand sent his way last year. The Man United legend said: "Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton – I’d go and get him. The reason why I’d take him is he’s one that can take the ball and transfer it through the middle of the pitch.

England's Adam Wharton reacts

"He’s got a great range of passing. I think he’d be a great addition to the squad, a young English talent as well. He’s like Carrick sometimes, the way he slaps the ball about."
