On a busy match day, The Dock Wall Bar can need as many as 17 staff just to keep up with demand. The atmosphere is electric, the bar is packed, and Everton fans flood through the doors. But for Julie and Kevin Maddocks, match days were never meant to be the whole story.
Julie: "There are maybe 30 match days a year. There are 365 days in a year, and we want to be here for all of them." The married couple took over the Dickson Street venue in August and opened to the public in December.
Located close to the bar has quickly carved out a reputation not just as a place to drink, but as a community space that prides itself on connection, conversation and care.
During the week, tea and coffee take centre stage, with a front-facing kiosk that has already become a favourite among locals. Mondays bring a comforting “lovey” hot chocolate, Thursdays are dedicated to men’s peer support groups, and several times a month the space is offered to addiction recovery meetings, particularly supporting people recovering from ketamine use.
Julie, 59, said the response since opening has been overwhelmingly positive. She said: “We’re much more than just a bar. We're a social hub. We run community events, mental health days, and give local groups somewhere safe to meet. You honestly never know who’s going to walk in.
“One minute it’ll be 18 ramblers who’ve come in from West Kirby, and the next it’s tourists exploring the history of the gates and the Tobacco Warehouse. People are fascinated by how much the area has changed.”
