West Ham’s Thin Squad Sparks Free Agent Debate
With several out-of-contract players still searching for new clubs, West Ham fans have been debating whether the club should bolster what many see as a thin squad. Free agents always come with risk, especially those nearing the final move of their careers.
Jesse Lingard was once again offered to West Ham, sparking predictable chatter. While rumours suggested the club showed interest, a club source quickly shut it down: “We’ve turned him down, as have many clubs. It’s a big jump from Korea to the Premier League.”
A reunion was never really on the cards.
Sterling, Dawson and Zouma Links Dismissed
At 31, Raheem Sterling arguably still has something to offer, and his £250k-per-week Chelsea wages were no longer an obstacle after talks with several clubs — including West Ham and Fulham.
However, Nuno Espírito Santo preferred Adama Traoré, and Sterling is believed to favour a move to Saudi Arabia or MLS instead.
Craig Dawson, now 35, might have appealed as a short-term stopgap. But he hasn’t played competitive football since May 2025, and his peak years are firmly behind him. A romantic idea, but not a realistic solution.
In a surprising twist, Kurt Zouma was offered to Newcastle United, though they chose not to pursue the initial enquiry. West Ham fans know the story well: injuries have limited his ability to play regular Premier League football, and he struggled during his stint in Romania.

Saint-Maximin Snapped Up as Payet Dream Persists
The standout free agent was Allan Saint-Maximin, still only 28 and recently released by Club América. West Ham never made a move, and RC Lens acted quickly — snapping him up within days. He’ll now be lighting up Ligue 1 instead of the London Stadium.
And then there’s Dimitri Payet. At 38, he’s not officially retired and even managed four matches and two assists for Vasco da Gama in 2025.
For the romantics, the idea of Payet returning to East London is irresistible. It would be one hell of a story — even if it’s one that belongs more to fantasy than reality.
