Michael Carrick shares injury update on Matthijs de Ligt and Mason Mount, one is'not too far'

Manchester United face Tottenham Hotspur this weekend at Old Trafford, and ahead of the game, Michael Carrick has given injury updates.

One week after Manchester United beat Fulham 3-2, Old Trafford plays host to another London-based side, with Thomas Frank’s struggling Spurs side the opposition.

For the clash of two – technically – of the big six, United are blessed with a majority full-strength team to choose from, with only a handful of injuries to Michael Carrick’s side.

Patrick Dorgu is sure to be out for United, with his hamstring problem keeping him on the shelf for potentially 10 weeks.

But what about the rest of the injury list?

Michael Carrick provides an update on Matthijs de Ligt and Mason Mount

United, under Carrick, have so far been unstoppable, winning three games in a row and putting in performances worthy of the three points each time.

Carrick was lucky to have arrived at a time which saw Amad and Bryan Mbeumo both back from AFCON, Bruno Fernandes fit, and Kobbie Mainoo ready to play.

However, it’s not all positive with Mason Mount and Matthijs de Ligt both out injured.

Ahead of the Spurs game, Carrick spoke to the press on MUTV and revealed the latest on the pair.

“Mason [Mount will return] sooner. He’s not too far away. We’re hopeful it won’t be too long.

“Matta [De Ligt] is working his way back, taking his steps and improving and being really positive.”

United fans will be frustrated by this news, given De Ligt has been missing since November with a back injury, with very little indication of a return.

Meanwhile, Mount’s situation is very annoying.

Mason Mount surely on thin ice at Manchester United

Mount cost United £55m in 2023, a fee which he has only lived up to on a handful of occasions in the past three years.

66 games in almost three seasons is an embarrassing return, with unavoidable injuries the culprit, but at some point, United are going to need to be ruthless.

If Ineos’ two-year rule for new signings is going to be upheld, then Mount could be a casualty this summer, assuming a buyer can be found.

When playing this season, Mount has been really good, but the issue is that he cannot be relied on to play throughout a season, which makes it impossible to count on him in the squad building.

United needs to cut ties this summer and move on. It is a shame, but as he ages, he is likely to get injured more and more.
