Why move is paying off for Albion teen playing for ex-Liverpool star

And that has delighted the former Liverpool and Holland star who is now his head coach.

There was unprecedented January movement among the Seagulls’ players on loan and one of their decisions is quickly paying off.

From barely getting on the pitch at Dutch top-flight outfit Excelsior, Yoon Do-Young is now playing big minutes and making an impact in the second tier.

He has helped Dordrecht take ten points in his first four games and has always gone beyond the 70-minute mark.

There was a highljght reel moment when he scored direct from a corner, taken left-footed from the right, in a 3-2 win over Den Bosch.

And his run led to the penalty from which Dordrecht went ahead on the way to a 3-1 success at home to Helmond Sport this week.

While he has moved clubs, Dordrecht is not far down the road and he has remained in the same city.

He has been helped by the fact friend, compatriot and house-mate Seung-Gyan Bae, 18, plays in central midfield.

The pair met when they arrived in Rotterdam last summer while Bae played for Feyenoord and Yoon for Excelsior.

“Yoon is doing very well,” reported Arco Bomgaars, who covers Dordrecht for Algemeen Dagblat newspaper and website..

“He started all four games since the Christmas break, as a right wing-back.

“The presence of his countryman Bae is also helping him perform well.

“Dirk Kuyt is very happy with his performances.”

Of the two South Koreans, 19-year-old Yoon speaks the better English, which bodes well for when he eventually comes to England.

He told Algemeen Dagblat: "We lived and still live close to each other. Now we see each other even more often and eat together.

“Korean food, of course, and I'm the better cook of the two!”

Not forgetting music. Yoon, the more outgoing of the two, said: “We're now bringing a bit of K-pop to Dordrecht.”

Both have enjoyed playing for head coach Kuyt, with Yoon saying: "It's impressive to work with him. I hope to learn and play a lot here."

Yoon made an emotional farewell to his previous club Daejeon Hana Citizen.

But he did not have substantial playing time for them and that he had was helped by a rule promoting the use of young South Koreans.

The wing-back role suggests some attention to defensive duties.

Most opponents play with two strikers and limited attacking width, which helps.

Yoon has also quickly been entrusted with set-pieces.

Kuyt said: “I am pleased with the way Toon is performing. He brings extra quality into the squad.”

Yoon is under contract with Albion until 2030 so is still very early in his journey with the club.

Albion fans will be aware that there have been players who have found Eredivisie to Premier League, or even Championship, a tough one in the past.

So Dutch second tier to the Prem is a chasm.

But the key thing is that he is playing. More than five hours of action in four games compared to 15 minutes in his last two months at Excelsior.

He has helped Dordrecht move to within two points of the last play-off spot ahead of Monday’s game away to AZ Alkmaar’s development team.

Speaking as he made the mid-season move, Albion’s sporting director Jason Ayto said: “We feel the switch will give Do-Young more opportunities of game time during the second half of the season.

“He has worked hard during his time at Excelsior, but found his chances were limited, so we hope this move will help continue his development.

“We wish him well in the second half of the season and will be monitoring his progress.”
