Leicester City
When Leeds United went down in 2023, there was a lot going on behind the scenes at the club. That summer, the Whites saw an exodus of players, as most did not want to play in the Championship.
Ownership had to figure out the way forward for the club, including hiring a new coach. Leeds decided on Daniel Farke, and were counting on his experience after he guided Norwich City to the Premier League on more than one occasion. His first season in charge was an interesting experience; he had to put together a team that had been dissected, with most players finding new clubs.

Despite all that, Leeds had one of their best seasons in recent history – they played exciting attacking football. But ultimately, that was not enough as they narrowly missed out on automatic promotion. The Whites had to go through the play-offs, where they reached the final. Leeds then suffered a heart-breaking loss to Southampton that year. But Daniel Farke secured automatic promotion the next season.
Leicester City handed sanction after 2023/24 season
Leicester City were the winners of the Championship in the 2023/24 season. Enzo Maresca and his side overpowered every team in the division, after spending over £90 million. They went up to the Premier League but came straight back down after finishing in 18th place. As of this week, the Foxes have been docked six points after being found to have breached the EFL’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR) for the 2023/24 season.
This decision was made after a recommended by an independent commission, ratified by the EFL board last Thursday. With Leicester City losing six points, they now sit outside of the relegation zone in the Championship on goal difference. The club had breached the relevant threshold by £20.8m over the three-year period ending 2023/24. Leicester were also found guilty of breaching Premier League rules for not providing their annual accounts when requested to.

Leeds United fans will be furious
It has been over a season later, but Leeds fans will not like that a decision on the 2023/24 season has now been taken. If Leicester City were docked points that year, the Whites would have made the Premier League through the automatic promotion spot. That summer when they failed to win the play-off final was a very sad period, with players and fans admitting years later that it was not a good time to be around Elland Road.
