The Sunderland transfer questions still to be answered ahead of next summer window

How will the summer transfer window pan out for Sunderland?

Sunderland’s recruitment strategy has been the toast of the Premier League this season, transforming the Black Cats from a side who scraped their way to promotion glory via the Championship play-offs into a team who - whisper it - may hold an outside shot at finishing in a European qualification spot over the coming months.

But with the January transfer window behind us and just 14 matches left between now and the end of the 2025/26 campaign, attention is inevitably going to turn more and more to what next summer might bring.

With that in mind, here are a few of the questions that Sunderland may still need to answer by the time the market reopens...

Can Sunderland hold onto their best talent?

It’s not something that any of us really want to think about, but the double-edged nature of Sunderland’s stellar recruitment strategy in recent seasons means that any breakout stars on Wearside are always likely to garner attention from elsewhere. We saw it with Jobe Bellingham last summer, and already there are mounting reports suggesting that the likes of Robin Roefs and Noak Sadiki - amongst others - could be targeted by a whole host of Premier League and continental heavyweights come the end of the campaign. Will Sunderland have the resolve and the security to fend off any advances for the time being?

What next for Sunderland’s loanees?

Primarily, the January transfer window provided Sunderland with an opportunity to trim a hefty squad down to size, and as a consequence a number of players on the periphery of Regis Le Bris’ first team plans were sent out on loan to various destinations. Anthony Patterson, for instance, left for Millwall, while the likes of Leo Hjelde and Aji Alese headed out to Sheffield United and Portsmouth for temporary stints, and Simon Adingra joined AS Monaco on an agreement that could be made permanent in the summer. Elsewhere, the likes of Jenson Seelt, Alan Browne, Arthur Masuaku, as well as a handful of others, are also spending spells away from the Stadium of Light, and the big question is, can any of these players force their way back into the first team picture on Wearside, or are they all ultimately destined for permanent departures?

Does Wilson Isidor have a long-term future at the club?

An immensely popular figure in the North East, Isidor found himself occupying plenty of gossip columns this January as speculation simmered over his future with Sunderland. There have been suggestions that the Frenchman has grown frustrated with a lack of opportunities following Brian Brobbey’s advent at the Stadium of Light, and if that is the case, what comes next? Can we expect to see Isidor leave the Black Cats at the end of the season? It feels much more possible than it did this time a few weeks ago.

Will Sunderland need to buy a new right winger?

To their credit, Sunderland did sign a new winger this winter, and in Nilson Angulo, they will be hoping that they have unearthed a gem capable of making an immediate impact on the first team at the Stadium of Light. That being said, the Ecuadorian - like new teammates Chemsdine Talbi and Romaine Mundle - prefers to operate on the left flank, and as such, the Black Cats are still in a position whereby their only out-and-out option on the opposite side of the pitch (not including a moonlighting Trai Hume) is Bertrand Traore. Will somebody come to the fore with a hitherto unexpected burst of versatility, does Le Bris already have enough options in the area of his squad, or will Sunderland need to go out and buy yet another wide man over the coming months?

Will Sunderland spend big again this summer?

Last summer, in preparation for the unenviable task of bridging the chasm between the Championship and the Premier League, Sunderland went out and brought in 14 fresh acquisitions for a combined total in excess of £150 million. Results since have massively vindicated that approach, and as the Black Cats continue to look upwards towards the upper reaches of the top flight, could they enact another ambitious recruitment drive this year? If the financial might is there and the right opportunities present themselves in the market, it wouldn’t be a great surprise to see Sunderland go again this summer.
