‘Private and family issues’ – More to Nottingham Forest rejection than simply football

On Wednesday, Corriere dello Sport hailed Robin Gosens for rejecting a January move to Nottingham Forest.

This came right after Gianluca Di Marzio reported on the English club’s offer for the left-back.

The Premier League club came forward quite late in January, however, the former Inter Milan player rejected the deal, preferring to stay in Florence.

Initially, the reason for snubbing Nottingham Forest was explained as loyalty to La Viola. The 31-year-old and other senior players at the club had apparently made a pact: Stay at least until the summer and save the club from relegation.

Now, Tuttomercatoweb take a closer look and suggest it was personal reasons rather than professional loyalty.

The outlet appear confident that Gosens’ ‘private and family’ issues played the major role in his decision.

Nottingham Forest made a ‘decisive’ move for the Germany international, and Fiorentina had also opened the door to letting him depart.

An agreement between the Midlands club and La Viola had been reached in a short space of time. At that point, the player’s rejection killed the deal.

As a result, Gosens thanked Nottingham Forest for their offer of a three-year contract. Sean Dyche’s side were also putting forward a significant wage upgrade.

Gosens is no stranger to doing this. Atalanta came forward to bring him back to Bergamo in the summer of 2025. Despite the promise of a romantic return, the German sent the approach back.

Whether Nottingham Forest will return in the summer remains to be seen. The drop to Serie B is even more drastic than to the Championship, and there could be something of a fire-sale.
