Regis Le Bris sees benefits in adopting "underdog mindset" in trip to Arsenal

One caveat to their impressive season and points haul has been Sunderland's form on the road.

Nonetheless, the awaiting tall order of high-flying Arsenal on Saturday will be a free hit for The Black Cats since they sit just four points off their initial forty point target to remain in the top flight for another season.

Le Bris said: "We have to show the best version of Sunderland with an underdog mindset. They are playing at a huge level, they are impressive in the Premier League, they are outstanding in the Champions League, they are probably one of the best teams in Europe at the minute.

"So, a tough challenge, but an exciting challenge. We know that the level expected is really high."

He also elaborated on his side embracing the status of underdogs, "We are a newly-promoted side. I think if we keep this mindset, we stay humble, we know that we have to be strong in our key pillars, otherwise the level is too high and you get punished really quickly.

"And you play with freedom because we can make mistakes. But, at the same time, we can create something, and that's been the case so far."

In November, Sunderland snatched a leveller in stoppage time through Brian Brobbey as the Stadium of Light erupted against The Gunners.

Certainly, they are capable of holding their own, but Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka will remain sidelined and he will be denied a return to his former club.

Le Bris issued an update on his progress, saying the player is doing well. Yet, he confirmed he hadn't received a result for Xhaka’s scan for the ankle injury.

The resounding 3-0 victory over Burnley featured the returning Habib Diarra, and Le Bris attributed much of the success against the fellow promoted side to new leaders in the spine of the team stepping up in Xhaka’s absence.

"We have to split this leadership. You can’t build a strong leader like Granit in one second. This game against Burnley was mature, because of this authority within the pitch and it comes from everywhere."
