Everton’s role in the UK’s bid to host the Women’s World Cup may not be known until the start of the next decade. The English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish football associations came together in November to confirm their ambition to host the 2035 tournament.

Liverpool is one of 16 host cities named within the bid with Hill Dickinson Stadium among the stadiums included. For commercial reasons it would be known as Everton Stadium if selected.

However, new Liverpool Council documents have revealed confirmation of the stadium being selected won’t be announced until at least 2030. The listing follows a series of major events secured for Everton’s new waterfront home, including the Rugby League Ashes Test played last year, Super League Magic Weekend 2026, and its status as a UEFA EURO 2028 host venue.

Hill Dickinson Stadium is one of 22 proposed UK stadia included in the bid to host what would be, with 48 teams taking part, the biggest single-sport event in the country’s history. Each facility has been selected for its visitor experience, transport connectivity, and ability to deliver world class football on the biggest stage.

Jen Falding, Liverpool Council’s strategic lead for major sports events, told a meeting of the city council’s culture and economy scrutiny committee how while the UK bid was the only bid, this does not mean the event is guaranteed. FIFA visits are expected this month with a decision to be announced in April.

FIFA will have the ultimate decision on which stadia will be included in the final tournament if the bid is successful with an anticipated eight to 10 arenas from England.

Hill Dickinson Stadium’s role is expected to be confirmed in four years.

Ms Falding added: “We’ve got quite a way to go on that but it’s really important that we’re part of that bid.”

In two years’ time, it is known the 52,769-seater stadium will hold five games as part of the men’s UEFA EURO 2028 tournament.

These will comprise four group matches on June 11, 14, 17 and 20, and one round of 16 match on June 24, 2028.

Ms Falding said as part of the hosting, a fanzone is to be set up along the city’s waterfront for the duration of the tournament.

Officials from UEFA are expected to visit Liverpool in the coming weeks as part of preparations for the matches taking place across England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.
