Everton might have just signed a new James Garner as exciting transfer strategy continues…

Everton never truly displayed a clear recruitment strategy before The Friedkin Group took over in December 2024.

Under Farhad Moshiri, many short-sighted moves were made. There were expensive deals for the likes of Yerry Mina, Davy Klaassen, Andre Gomes, Allan and Beto which all failed to deliver much success, and these additions carried little resale value too.

However, the deadline day addition of Tyrique George on loan from Chelsea – with an option to buy – was the latest chapter of an exciting trend which is beginning to develop at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

David Moyes has surely got to throw George straight in from the start vs Fulham, hasn’t he!? 🤔

Everton sense value in taking unwanted talents from European giants

The £9m signing of James Garner from Manchester United back in September 2022 was a gamble that paid off for Everton.

The man born in Birkenhead had only ever made seven appearances for Manchester United – who clearly felt he was not up to the required standard – so he had a lot to prove on Merseyside.

In just over three years – however – Garner has developed into one of the best players at Everton, recently landing a new contract which runs until July 2030.

It showed there is clearly value when it comes to taking academy talents from the traditional ‘Big Six’ who were being ignored in preference of expensive imports from abroad.

It is a strategy German clubs cottoned onto years ago, with Borussia Dortmund taking Jadon Sancho from Manchester City for just £8m in August 2017 before sanctioning a £73m sale to Manchester United in July 2021.

Everton have now made a similar move by signing the aforementioned George on loan from Chelsea, a player who Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior have both overlooked more often than not this season as the likes of Pedro Neto, Alejandro Garnacho, Jamie Gittens and Estevao are preferred.

The 20-year-old England U21 international is regarded as a massive talent within his age range, and with Chelsea already foolishly cashing in on the likes of Marc Guehi, Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento in recent years, do not be surprised if George embarks on a similar upwards trajectory.

Everton have another James Garner-like talent they are ignoring themselves

Everton took this transfer policy abroad last summer when targeting talented youngsters being ignored at Bayern Munich, ultimately taking Adam Aznou in an £8m move.

However, Moyes is yet to hand the 19-year-old a single second of Premier League football so far this season.

Aznou surely has to be handed more minutes after THAT display…😫

He showed more in his cameo than Mykolenko has all season

Aznou impressed in his one and only appearance during the FA Cup defeat against Sunderland, and with the struggling Vitalii Mykolenko out of contract this summer, it seems naive not to give the Bayern Munich academy graduate more opportunities.
