‘We looked at 86 clubs across Europe…’ – Paraag Marathe makes sensational Leeds United admission

Leeds United

It has been years since the 49ers acquired Leeds United and fans would give their owners positive reviews. The Whites have had their ups and downs, but the last few years have seen some success.

The aim of the takeover was to push Leeds back into the lime light of English football. So far, off the field, the 49ers have done some great work in marketing, branding and partnerships. Their decision to choose Daniel Farke as the man to bring them back into the Premier League has been proven right time and time again. The focus now will be to keep the team in the top flight which will not be an easy task.

Paraag Marathe makes huge Leeds United admission

Club chief Paraag Marathe has been speaking on Leeds United and how the 49ers made their decision to choose the club. In an interview with Men In Blazers, he gave some insight into the process behind deciding to invest in the West Yorkshire club:

“We looked at 86 clubs across Europe over an 18-24 month period.

“The one that so obviously had the chance to be the brightest star in the sky was Leeds United… Looking at Leeds, Leeds had all these great European cups and all those championships in the 70s and again in the 90s but fell on hard times, went through multiple ownership groups and got relegated twice but because of that historic success, they had this massive global fanbase, like a sleeping giant, just begging for someone to come in and polish up the diamond and restore it to what it could be.

“It’s a one club town, it’s the biggest one club city in arguably all of Europe, and if we can get this right, we could build something that I think is going to be the envy of European football.”

49ers need to show more ambition

The ownership have been great in their short time at the club, but in some periods, their ambition has been questioned. Especially when it comes to transfers; there have been multiple windows where the club seems to avoid adding real quality to the team. And sometimes, the club make some decisions in the window that fans do not understand. In hindsight, a lot of their decisions have been spot on, but to reach the top in Europe, the ambition must go above and beyond.
