Guimaraes set for Newcastle return as hamstring injury update on Gordon emerges

Guimaraes has missed Newcastle’s last four games after suffering an ankle injury during last month’s Champions League win over PSV Eindhoven.

Since he joined in January 2022, the Magpies have not won a single Premier League game in which the Brazilian has failed to appear, a record that continued in last month’s home defeat to Aston Villa and last weekend’s loss to Liverpool at Anfield.

Getting Guimaraes back into the side would be a major boost for Eddie Howe as he looks to guide his side back into the top half of the table, and while the Newcastle skipper still has to come through a final training session unscathed, the expectation is that he will be given the green light to feature against Brentford.

“He’s [Guimaraes] getting closer,” said Howe. “He did a training session on Wednesday when we were travelling and felt pretty good. I’ll see him again today and fingers crossed he’ll be fit.”

While Guimaraes should be back in the starting line-up against Brentford, Anthony Gordon, Lewis Miley and Joelinton are expected to remain on the sidelines.

Gordon suffered a hamstring injury in the first half of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg defeat at Manchester City, and while the problem does not look too serious, this weekend’s game will almost certainly come too soon for the England international.

“There’s no major update on Anthony,” said Howe. “I think there’s probably every chance that he’ll miss this game coming up at the weekend, but we hope it’s not a serious injury and that he’ll be back pretty soon.

“We’ll find out today on Lewie. I’m awaiting an update on him. Again, it’s not a serious injury and we’re hoping he’ll be back pretty soon.”
