With one win in our last seven and our away struggles continuing in recent defeats to Liverpool and Man City over the past week, it’s been a rough few days for Eddie Howe.
Some sections of the fanbase turned on the boss on Wednesday night, calling for change and fresh ideas, even if it seems abundantly clear that Newcastle’s [owners are not even close to sacking](https://www.nufcblog.co.uk/2026/02/05/saudi-pif-set-to-back-not-sack-eddie-howe-new-report-explains-newcastle-stance/) the 48-year-old.
Still, social media has been a pretty grim place in the 48 hours following our Carabao Cup exit, and Howe was asked about this during this morning’s press conference at the club’s media centre.
Speaking to Charlie Bennett at Newcastle World, the Toon boss issued this message to fans when asked to comment on the social media backlash he’s received.
> _“I’m pleased I’m not on social media if it’s heated._
>
> _“My message is that we’re fighting and I think you can see that on the pitch._
>
> _“I can assure you the players are maxed out physically, mentally… we’re all trying for success._
>
> _“It doesn’t always go in a straight line, there’ll be bumps in the road, as there has been this season._
>
> _“It’s been a really challenging season on many different fronts. We’re all trying for success.”_
The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards was next to ask Howe a question, and enquired about reports suggesting the Newcastle boss could walk away from his position at the club this summer.
Eddie’s response was one of surprise, insisting that is news to him and not in his thoughts, instead focusing on the task in hand and his determination to give his all; to the club, players and staff in a bid to get our season back on track.
> _“That’s a surprise to me. I give my best every day. To the football club, to all the players, to the staff._
>
> _“I’ll try and be the best version of myself to inspire the team to win games._
>
> _“That’s the only thing in my thought. I don’t tend to look too far ahead I’ll prepare and plan for the club to move forward in every sense. My individual future is not relevant.”_
Social media is a weird and wonderful place, although it’s been far more of the former this week.
Criticism and frustration at how elements of this season are panning out? I totally get it. But some of the abuse I’ve seen thrown towards our manager, alongside accusations that Anthony Gordon has faked an injury? Baffling.
