Eddie Howe stunned by suggestion he could resign as Newcastle United manager

Eddie Howe has discussed his future at Newcastle United after being given a vote of confidence by CEO David Hopkinson.

Eddie Howe admitted he doesn’t know how long he will remain in charge of Newcastle United after being questioned on his future at the club.

Howe is one of the Premier League’s longest-serving managers having jonined Newcastle in November 2021. His first match in charge was a 3-3 draw against Brentford at St James’ Park which he watched from a hotel due to suffering from COVID.

Brentford will be Newcastle’s opponents at St James’ Park on Saturday as Howe’s side look to bounce back from successive defeats at Liverpool and Manchester City. The Bees sit three points above Newcastle in the Premier League table heading into the game despite losing their manager, Thomas Frank, captain Christian Norgaard and top two scorers from last season in Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa in the summer.

Wissa is now at Newcastle but has struggled to make a big impact so far after being ruled out for the first three months of his spell due to a knee injury.

NUFC’s 2030 ambitions

Although Newcastle have languished around midtable this season, Newcastle chief executive officer David Hopkinson came out this week and doubled down on his ambitions to make the club one of the best in the world by 2030.

The CEO also gave Howe a vote of confidence and some pressure to be the man to help facilitate that.

But when asked about Hopkinson’s ambitions and comments, Howe responded: “It is a difficult one for me to answer, timelines and estimations are very difficult to give as a manager because I don't know what is going to happen next week, let alone in four years' time.

"So I think all I try to do is improve the players that I'm working with. I try to make them better players every day.

"Every transfer window, you hope can improve the squad. So you have the coaching aspects on the players you have and the players you recruit are so important.

"Then we see where that takes us. It is very difficult for me to give a response to timelines. I don't think that is right.

“I don't know my length of time here, I have no idea. I just try to do my best every day until I'm told different."

Eddie Howe responds to NUFC resignation speculation

Howe was then asked about speculation suggesting that he could resign from his position as head coach in the summer.

Taken aback, the Newcastle boss responded: “That’s a surprise to me. I give my best to the football club every single day, to all the players and the staff. I try to be the best version of myself to inspire the team to win games. That’s my only thought.

“I don’t tend to look too far ahead but I try to prepare and plan for the club to move forward in every sense. My individual future isn’t really relevant.”

The Magpies boss is under contract at Newcastle until the summer of 2027.
