One of Man United’s former midfielders could be set for a return to the club, amid recent contract talks.

Man United are expected to spend big in the summer, after a January transfer window where they failed to make any new major signings. United likely did this because of the uncertainty around the manager position, with Michael Carrick in charge until the end of the season...for now.

The Red Devils have been linked to the Premier League trio of Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, and Adam Wharton, but there are other names too. One of their former midfield stars could make a sensational return.

Napoli “worried” about McTominay contract talks

Scott McTominay left Old Trafford in August 2024, as he joined Serie A side Napoli for a modest fee of just £26m. Since then, the Scottish international has been superb, scoring 22 goals in 69 games, winning a Serie A title, and getting himself a Ballon d’Or nomination.

His current contract is due to expire in 2028, and it is understood that Napoli wants to tie the 29-year-old down for the long term. However, his impressive performances have sparked rumours suggesting he could return to the Premier League, whether that be Man United or somewhere else.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Napoli’s global business development officer Leonardo Giammarioli has said that the club are worried that they won’t be able to keep the Scottish midfielder for the long-term.

He said: “Of course, we’re worried. But Scott deserves to keep progressing. Maybe not now, maybe not next season, but if the right opportunity comes along in the future, he’s earned it. It’s difficult for Italian teams — the league is still losing revenue.

“We’re trying to grow and remain competitive, but keeping top players isn’t easy. It wasn’t simple to bring players like McTominay in — keeping them is even harder. Every decision we make in the market has to be smart.”

Man United should target McTominay to solve midfield issues

Seeing as the Red Devils need at least one, maybe two new midfield players in the summer, they could opt to target McTominay for a return to Old Trafford, as his qualities are exactly what the United midfield needs at the moment.

McTominay provides leadership, defensive stability, and also an attacking quality. He could come in, alongside one of the expensive Premier League holding midfielders and Kobbie Mainoo, to lead United into their next era.

Seeing as he already knows the club, it wouldn’t take long for the 29-year-old to adjust to life in the Premier League, and he also wouldn’t cost too much money, considering that Napoli only paid £26m for him two years ago. If he fails to sign a contract extension, keep an eye out for a return for the Scottish international.
