Manchester United legend, Teddy Sheringham, has recently discussed his thoughts on young striker Benjamin Šeško, offering the club an idea of how to get the best out of him.
Benjamin Sesko had a tough start to his Manchester United career. As he struggled to get into the first team, his confidence faded, and the goals completely dried up. It took the 22-year-old seven games to score his first goal against Brentford in a 3-1 loss.
He followed up his first goal with another against an in-form Sunderland, sparking belief that he would kick on for the Red Devils. Instead, the striker went eight games without a goal, and doubt within the fanbase really started to ramp up.
However, it finally seems that he has turned a new leaf and may become the main man that the club spent over £70 million on. In his last four games, he has scored four goals, including a 94th-minute winner against Fulham.
Fans have re-ignited their faith in the Slovakian, and after hearing the roar of the Streford End for his goal, many are certain more goals will come as he chases that feeling again in the future.
Sheringham’s striker solution for United
In a recent interview relayed by The Mirror, Sheringham spoke about how Manchester United’s past mistakes when looking for a number nine could be resolved with the acquisition of England’s top scorer.
“I’ve quite liked Benjamin Šeško recently. I thought he played very well against Leeds in particular, linking up the play. He’s scored a couple of goals recently, too, but he’s a young lad still learning his game.
“There is a big difference between a young lad enjoying his game for an average Premier League team and then going in at Manchester United and being expected to lead the line for a top club and challenging for honours. He’s still finding his game, and I believe he will become a good player.
“I think Šeško is a talented boy, and I think he’s clearly got something about him, but as ever, Manchester United need results now. They need to bring in a proven goalscorer this summer. For me, they should do something that they should have done years ago and bring in Harry Kane.
“They should have gone for Harry Kane three years ago, but they didn’t. They went down the slightly less expensive route in Rasmus Højlund, and now Benjamin Šeško.
“You can see what you end up with when you go down that route. You end up with someone who is just an okay player, rather than a top player leading the line.”
Do United need Kane, or do they have enough?
The main reason quite a few people believe that Man United need another striker is that being the main goalscorer for a club like United is a huge responsibility, and for a young player, that responsibility can be too much for them, as we saw with Højlund throughout his time at the club.
However, Šeško is not alone up front at Man United; he has the company of Premier League-proven goal scorers, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. The pair scored a combined 35 goals last season, and 14 already this season.
As the two are older and already familiar with the league, the onus of scoring is on them as well, so while Sesko tries to adapt to English football, he has those two filling in for him and taking the responsibility off of his shoulders.
They also create friendly competition for the Slovakian, along with Šeško’s four-goal, four-game hot streak; Mbeumo remains the club’s top scorer, and Cunha is two in two, including an outrageous winner at the Emirates.
Sheringham may or may not be right about his Harry Kane masterplan, but even if Man United decide against prying the Englishman away from the Bundesliga, Šeško still has plenty of support already at Old Trafford with him to help him succeed.
