Man United sold one of their young midfielders in the January transfer window to a Premier League rival.
It was a very quiet January transfer window for Manchester United, as the Red Devils failed to secure any major signings for Michael Carrick. It is understood that United are expected to spend big in the summer, when they know who their next permanent manager is.
However, even though the transfer deadline closed on Monday, Man United have sold one of their young players to Premier League rivals Leeds United.
Leeds United sign Man Utd youngster
Despite the transfer window closing on Monday, Leeds United announced the signing of Manchester United midfielder Edward Ibrovic-Fletcher on a deal which will keep him at the Yorkshire-based club until 2028.
In a club statement, Leeds said: “The Leeds-born attacking midfielder returns to his home city and has signed a deal that will keep him at Thorp Arch until 2028. A versatile player also capable of featuring across the front line, Ibrovic-Fletcher has been capped by Serbia at youth level.”
Ibrovic-Fletcher made eight appearances for Man United’s under-18s side and will now join up with Leeds’ academy to play in the under-18s Premier League and work his way up the youth system at Elland Road.
The boyhood Leeds fan said upon his Man United departure: “I can’t wait to get started. I was here when I was really young for a little bit, and now I am back here. I am an attacking player, a creative player on the box and like scoring and assisting.
“I am a Leeds fan, so that was obviously a factor! I just want to get in, play consistently and score. To play in front of the fans will be a dream come true.”
One in one out for Man United’s youth squad
As Ibrovic-Fletcher left the club on Thursday, Man United did see a youth arrival of their own this week, as they signed Blackburn goalkeeper Solomon Honor. The young keeper has been added to the Red Devils’ Premier League squad, so could make an impact if United see injuries to Senne Lammens and Altay Bayindir.
Honor previously spent some time with rivals Manchester City before moving to Blackburn in 2021. He has since played for their U18s and U21s side’s, making 24 appearances, conceding 48 goals, and keeping one clean sheet.
However, these minor transfer moves are all for the future, and Carrick will be focused on the here and now. In terms of United’s transfer business, the summer is set to be a huge window, regardless of who will be in charge at Old Trafford next season and beyond.
