Peter Schmeichel is right to call out Man Utd for never signing 'fantastic player' whose 'valuable' trait is priceless…

Peter Schmeichel has been left scratching his head at why neither Manchester United nor Liverpool made a major move for an emerging talent in 2023.

Manchester United are mounting a top-four challenge in the Premier League this season and the Red Devils’ position has been strengthened due to Michael Carrick.

Michael Carrick and Ruben Amorim as Man Utd managers

Michael Carrick was appointed Man Utd interim manager last month and the 44-year-old former midfielder has had a scintillating start to life in his role so far.

The United legend has collected a possible nine Premier League points from nine in his three matches in the Old Trafford dugout since his return to the club.

Carrick’s men sealed major wins over title-challengers Manchester City and Arsenal before Man Utd defeated Fulham 3-2 in last Sunday’s Premier League clash.

That’s not to mention the former Wolfsburg’s sensational solo run and assist in Tottenham’s 3-0 Premier League win over Man Utd at Old Trafford in 2024.

Speaking on Viaplay (via Tipsbladet), Peter Schmeichel said: “I think he has been a revelation.

“I think he is a fantastic player. He has a really, really good understanding of the game, and his speed is so valuable if you want to play offensive football.

“I sometimes think that a club like Manchester United or maybe even Liverpool should look for someone like him. Why didn’t they discover a player like him?”

Tottenham ace Micky van de Ven would have been perfect for the tactical set-up of Man Utd legend Michael Carrick

Micky van de Ven has the versatility to play as both a centre-back and a left-back, with the Netherlands international’s speed standing out for all of the right reasons.

Michael Carrick’s Man Utd tactics are a stark contrast to the polarising tactical system that Ruben Amorim was keen to deploy during his reign at Old Trafford.

With Ruben Amorim SACKED, where will Manchester United finish in 2025/26?

The United interim manager has been able to penetrate teams like Manchester City and Arsenal on the attack with the Red Devils’ blistering counterattack set-up.

The likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha have all been able to thrive with the speed capabilities each of them possesses at United.

Schmeichel is right to flag the importance of the ‘value’ of the speed trait belonging to Van de Ven, whose pace would have easily added another attacking layer to Carrick’s side.
