Manchester United fall behind Manchester City in battle for dream midfield transfer target

Manchester United are going to be one of the most aggressive teams in the summer transfer window when it comes to upgrading their midfield situation, and they are already scouting a who’s who of the best up and coming midfielders in the Premier League.

The trio of Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, and Carlos Baleba are all equally on the Manchester United transfer radar, and United could try to sign two of these very different profiles to potentially replace the likes of Manuel Ugarte, Casemiro, and even Bruno Fernandes, who continues to be linked to the Saudi Pro League entering 2026.

But Manchester United are also after an established Premier League superstar in Newcastle United No. 6 Bruno Guimaraes, who is the Magpies most important player and one of the finest all around midfielders and leaders in the world.

But according to transfer insider Ben Jacobs in an appearance on The United Stand show, although there is a verbal agreement from Newcastle to engage in Bruno Guimaraes transfer talks for 80 million pounds to a top club in the Champions League, Manchester City are “more likely” to make a move for the player than Manchester United.

Losing out on Bruno G. to their crosstown rivals would be the biggest blow of all, as Man City would have a crazy embarrassment of riches with Bruno and Rodri working together, giving them an even better midfield double pivot than Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi.

Manchester United can’t let that happen, and they should show more interest in Guimaraes at that price point. He is even better than the young players they want, though Man United should sign him and someone like Wharton or Anderson, too. And if not Bruno, then they need to sign two of the three young guns.
