Lutsharel Geertruida has Sunderland problem - even if Le Bris doesn't see it that way

But that, for the player himself, comes with frustrations.

Geertruida has featured in 18 of Sunderland's 24 Premier League games so far this season, but only 10 of those have been starts. And his versatility means he hasn't been able to nail down one particular spot in Le Bris' side.

Geetruida has played centre-half, full-back and holding midfield for Sunderland this season. There have been times in the campaign where you wonder how the Black Cats would have coped without the Dutchman.

But is the role of being a cover player enough for the 25-year-old, who should be in the peak years of his career, was wanted by Liverpool in the final days of the January window and has a summer World Cup to think about?

"Yes, that's a good point," admitted Le Bris, with Geertruida likely to have to again settle for a place on the bench today at Arsenal, where Sunderland are looking to build on their impressive Monday night victory over Burnley.

"I think his main strength is versatility, and probably in this industry, the most usual pathway is to stay in one position.

"I think we have to value his versatility, because it's his strength. And for him, it's a complex situation, because he's really useful for the squad.

"Often he's the 11th player for 10 positions on the pitch, but still the 11th, which is really good in the Premier League.

"And the ambition to be a starter is normal for a footballer. The World Cup, with this future in his mind, is really important as well. So many things are combined, and can add the complexity of the transfer window, with many rumours, many opportunities.

"But facts are facts, it's just the end of the process, do you want to sign or not, and it wasn't so clear finally."

Do Sunderland still want to sign Geertuida in the summer? They have the option to make the deal permanent for €23m. For all the reasons above, there's every chance the Black Cats will be keen to activate that option.

But asked about the prospect of making the deal permanent, Le Bris said: "I don't know, to be fair, I don't know.

"I really appreciate his profile, the person as well, he's a good team-mate in the dressing room.

"Like Trai [Hume], for example. Trai is our captain, right-back, left-back, centre-back, right-winger, midfielder, so the versatility in modern football is key.

"Probably you can't have six or seven players like that, but at least two or three are really important, and I think Lucha is this kind of player."
