Turkish side Fenerbahçe made a late attempt to send Edson Álvarez back to West Ham United before their deadline on Friday.
That’s according to Fotomaç. The Turkish outlet reports that Fenerbahçe ‘tried their luck’ with the West Ham midfielder just hours before the window closed.
Fenerbahçe had been hoping to part ways with Fred and then replace him with N’Golo Kante. The Frenchman eventually signed following a late delay, while Fred didn’t depart.
That left Fenerbahçe with three central midfielders after signing Álvarez on loan from West Ham in the future. They clearly didn’t want all three, so looked to move Álvarez back to the Hammers.
They got in touch with the Mexican, via his agent, to ask about a potential exit. The 28-year-old was specifically asked “Do you want to leave?” His answer was a simple, and unequivocal “No”. In fact, Fotomaç state that the West Ham man was ‘upset’ by the question even being asked.
What happens next with Álvarez, remains to be seen. He doesn’t appear to be in Fenerbahçe’s plans and them asking about a departure is a clear indication of that. He’s also only played 11 league games this season, further proof of the fact.
With the window now closed in Türkiye too, he perhaps faces a frustrating end to the season before the World Cup.
