Bruno Guimaraes releases injury update hours ahead of Newcastle United v Brentford

Newcastle United injuries: Bruno Guimaraes has issued a fresh update on his return to fitness ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash against Brentford at St James’ Park.

Newcastle United are hoping to have captain Bruno Guimaraes back available for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Brentford at St James’ Park (5:30pm kick-off).

The Brazilian midfielder has missed Newcastle’s last four matches in all competitions, though was an unused substitute in the 1-1 draw at Paris Saint-Germain.

Guimaraes suffered an ankle injury in the 3-0 win over PSV Eindhoven at St James’ Park last month and hasn’t been in action since.

Newcastle, who have not won a Premier League match without Guimaraes since his arrival, are also without a win in each of their last four games in his absence.

Bruno Guimaraes injury update issued by Eddie Howe

In his pre-match press conference, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe issued an update on Guimaraes’ fitness.

“Getting closer,” Howe said on his captain. “He did a training session on Wednesday and he felt pretty good. I’ll see him today and fingers crossed, he’ll be fit.”

As supporters eagerly await a matchday preview Instagram post from the Brazilian to hint at his involvement against Brentford, the Magpies captain provided an update on his recovery in his matchday programme notes.

Despite his injury, Guimaraes was selected for Newcastle’s leadership group programme column in which he paid tribute to Jamaal Lascelles following his departure to join Leicester City before providing an update on his fitness.

He wrote: “Before I look to today’s game, I've been working hard to get back on the pitch. I'm feeling better, getting better and hopefully I can be out there as soon as possible.

“It's been around two weeks without playing and I can't wait to get back. Every day and moment. I want to get back on the pitch. My life is not the same when I'm not playing, it's like some part of my body is not in the right position - so I'm missing playing a lot and I'm doing everything I can to be back with you.

“Today is a really important game for us, even more with the run of away games we are in at the moment. We know Brentford are a very good team, they showed it in the last game when they beat Aston Villa away from home.

“So we have to be aware of that and try to play our game and make them feel uncomfortable in our home.Of course, let's make an unbelievable atmosphere at St. James' Park, and get three important points.”

Brentford sit three points above Newcastle in the table heading into Saturday’s match.

The Magpies are also hoping Lewis Miley will be back available after a recent leg injury.

Team news is set to be confirmed at 4:15pm.
