Forget Casemiro, 120-touch Man Utd star has rediscovered his own world-class level under Michael Carrick

Manchester United stormed to a fourth successive win under Michael Carrick this weekend, beating Tottenham 2-0 at Old Trafford.

After Manchester United’s poor run against Tottenham over the past few years, it felt like a big challenge for Michael Carrick.

However, it ended up being a comfortable 2-0 win for United against Spurs, thanks to Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes’ goals.

It was the most dominant victory United have had under Carrick, aided by the red card to Cristian Romero, but from front to back, United’s entire team played well.

Casemiro had another great game, while his teammate put in a performance that was world-class.

Lisandro Martinez shines for Manchester United

Casemiro has returned to his world-class performance levels recently, and against Tottenham, Lisandro Martinez joined him with a super display.

While one Argentine central defender saw his day end with a red card, Martinez was immense at the back for United, both on and off the ball.

Martinez was on the ball more than anybody else for United, making 120 touches and completing 103 of 109 attempted passes from centre-back.

The 28-year-old made 21 passes into the final third as he stepped out into midfield time and time again, seeing passes on the pitch that many can’t even catch on TV.

Martinez also played well without the ball as he made seven recoveries, four clearances, four duels won, and two tackles.

Such a dominant showing by Martinez continues his top form and reestablishes himself as a world-class centre-back after being questioned a lot over the past 18 months.

Lisandro Martinez is defying logic with his form post-ACL injury

Most footballers don’t ever return to their best after suffering an injury as detrimental as an ACL, but Martinez has not missed a beat.

Despite a handful of eyebrow-raising moments, Martinez has overall been brilliant since he came back from injury.

Martinez has proved Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt wrong, and his performances keep getting better, which should see United not needing to replace him in the summer.

Ayden Heaven, as Martinez’s second choice, is perfect given that both share the same quality on the ball. However, right now, Martinez is undroppable.
