Rayan scores first Cherries goal in first start as Bournemouth draw with Villa

The hosts at the Vitality Stadium trailed Villa by a goal at the break, after former loanee Morgan Rogers powered past Djordje Petrovic after 23 minutes.

Bournemouth had had the better of the game, though, but weren’t able to convert any of their chances.

But Rayan showed just why he had been brought into the club in January with a superb solo goal, cutting inside and finishing low past Emiliano Martinez.

The Cherries were the better side and pushed for a winner but they weren’t able to find the final finish and the spoils were shared.

Andoni Iraola made one change from the side which beat Wolves, with Rayan coming in for his first start in the Premier League in place of Adam Smith.

Alex Jimenez dropped back into right back, with his start triggering the obligation to buy clause in his loan move from AC Milan.

David Brooks returned from injury onto the bench.

The Cherries had the better of the early chances in front of their home faithful, as their youthful attack caused Villa some early problems.

Alex Scott had a shot blocked behind after seven minutes, before Junior Kroupi saw the same result from an effort after Amine Adli played a low corner to the Frenchman on the edge of the box.

A big chance fell the way of Evanilson after Kroupi troubled Emiliano Martinez with a powerful shot, but the bouncing ball was rising and the Brazilian could only head it – meaning the Argentine stopper was able to gratefully catch.

Moments later, Ezri Konsa acrobatically cleared a delicate Kroupi chip off the line, but the flag went up for offside.

An excellent free kick routine saw the 19-year-old Frenchman again go close, as Adli played it to Evanilson who flicked it back for the forward, but his shot went just wide.

But, despite the Cherries chances, it was Villa who took the lead.

Not long after Ollie Watkins had a goal chalked off for offside, the visitors hit Bournemouth with a fast attack, Jadon Sancho slipped Rogers in and the former Cherries loanee smashed into the roof of the net from the angle.

Watkins wasn’t far away from diverting a Sancho cut back before Scott shot wide for the Cherries.

Martinez made an excellent save with his feet to deny Evanilson after the keeper parried a strong Scott effort into the path of the Brazilian.

From the resulting corner, Rayan struck the crossbar with a header as the set piece was cleared back across goal.

Bournemouth fans wanted a red card as Emiliano Buendia squared up to Jimenez after he wasn’t awarded a penalty following a challenge from the Spaniard, but both were booked.

The Cherries entered the break behind having had the better of the chances, and the opening exchanges of the second 45 saw few openings for either side.

But it was the Cherries who drew themselves level thanks to an excellent individual goal from Rayan in his first start for the club.

The Brazilian collected the ball on the right wing with plenty to do, he cut inside Lucas Digne before finishing well past Martinez at the keeper’s near post.

Adli shot wide from just outside the box, before Kroupi again chipped Martinez when he was played in, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Djordje Petrovic made a fantastic fingertip save to deny Matty Cash, before Kroupi was replaced by Ryan Christie.

VAR checked for a possible Cherries penalty after Scott was brought down by Konsa right on the edge of the box, but it was just outside the area.

Bournemouth were turning the screw as they sought a second goal.

Iraola introduced Brooks and Smith in place of Rayan and Jimenez with three minutes to play.

Christie tested Martinez with a good volley from an Evanilson cross, but the Argentine was equal to it, before the striker was replaced by Enes Unal as the game entered four additional minutes.

The Scot had another effort blocked behind and Marcos Senesi headed over the bar from a corner in stoppage time, but the Cherries couldn’t find the winner and had to settle for a point.
