Premier League result, player ratings and report after Bournemouth 1-1 Aston Villa in the Premier League.
Aston Villa’s Champions League hopes took another dent as Unai Emery’s side gave up a precious lead to draw 1-1 away at AFC Bournemouth.
Morgan Rogers thumped the visitors in front midway through the first half but Rayan made it a dream home Bournemouth debut, scoring a driven equaliser past Emiliano Martinez at his near post in what was a wonderful solo effort.
Rogers struck excellently for the opener as he rocketed the ball into the roof of the net and past Djordje Petrovic at the goalkeeper’s near post. Jadon Sancho’s assist deserves a mention, too, as he fed Rogers through nicely.
But the Villans, far from their best, conceded plenty of chances throughout and Bournemouth were good value for the point. Martinez had to make two double saves and Bournemouth hit the crossbar through Rayan before the Brazilian eventually found a way through.
Following wins for Manchester United and Chelsea, Villa are now gradually being caught by the competition. If Liverpool beat Manchester City in the Sunday late kick-off, it could get nervy for Emery and his men.
Goalkeeper and defence ratings
Emiliano Martinez: Kept Villa in the game with a host of really important saves, seven in total, though two - from Kroupi and Scott - looked a little awkward. Martinez will be disappointed to have been beaten at his near post for Rayan’s goal, though, as much as it was a good strike. 8
Matty Cash: Had a mixed game against Adli as he was beaten for strength by the Bournemouth wideman on quite a few occasions but timed his tackles well on others. Fizzed in a couple of great low crosses but Watkins didn’t gamble. 6
Ezri Konsa: Sprinted back to make a heroic goalline clearance from Kroupi’s lob early in the first half, only to see the linesman’s flag go up for a clear offside. Konsa made some big blocks and clearances, though he was a little lucky not to give a penalty away for a trip on Scott. 7
Tyrone Mings: Lacked accuracy with some of his passes out from the back but used his physicality well to keep Evanilson fairly quiet. That said, Mings could have tracked Evanilson better for the Brazilian’s two saved shots on rebounds from Martinez spills. 6
Lucas Digne (off 86’): Massively at fault for Rayan’s goal as he stood still and allowed the winger to dribble past like it was nothing. Digne, who didn’t exactly have any flash defensive moments to make up for his dreadful error, has a lot to answer for. 4
Midfield and attack ratings
Amadou Onana: Brave and dominant in the air but a little sloppy in possession. Emery will want more from Onana in the build-up to attacks. 6
Douglas Luiz (off 77’): Worked very hard to break up the play and was excellent on the half-turn, regularly progressing up the field with purpose. Luiz played several superb passes into the final third in the first half, however his performance dropped off a little in the second. 7
Emiliano Buendia (off 68’): Linked up well with Rogers and did his defensive duties well, often tracking back to support Digne. 7
Jadon Sancho (off 77’): A much better display from Sancho, who enjoyed playing out on the right. Sancho assisted Rogers’ opener with a brilliant reverse through ball and teed up Cash for his big chance just after the hour mark. He wasn’t as good on the left when Bailey came on, mind. 7
Morgan Rogers: Scored an absolute belter to make it 1-0, his eighth goal of the season. Rogers, who set up Watkins for his disallowed goal, had started positively and deserved his goal. 8*
Ollie Watkins (off 86’): Saw a goal disallowed for offside in the first half. Had a tame effort saved by Petrovic after a great run onto the box just after the break. 6
Leon Bailey (on 68’): Brought on to make an impact but made none whatsoever. Unfortunately, Bailey was very ineffective and lacked confidence on the right flank. 4
