Arsenal vs Sunderland: Pre-Match Analysis

Following a dominant 4-0 victory at Leeds United, Arsenal face Sunderland at the Emirates, another recently promoted side.

The Gunners will break a Premier League record if they manage not lose to the Black Cats; they are currently unbeaten in 43 home games against promoted sides, level with Chelsea, who didn't lose to a promoted side at Stamford Bridge between 2001 and 2015.

Arsenal haven't lost to a promoted team at home since Newcastle beat them 1-0 in 2010.

The chance to go nine points clear of City

For the second weekend in a row, Arsenal will play before Manchester City. Last weekend, the Gunners won 4-0 at Leeds on Saturday, and City drew 2-2 at Spurs on Sunday, despite being 2-0 up at halftime.

With Pep Guardiola’s side heading to Anfield this weekend, Arsenal have a massive opportunity to extend their lead to nine points, which is a substantial margin when considering there are only 13 games left in the season after this weekend.

Four games in the next ten days

Sunderland at home marks the beginning of a run of fixtures which will see Arsenal play four games in 10 days in two different competitions. What is helpful is that three of the games will be in London, the only exception being the trip to Wolves.

Arsenal’s next 10 days

Sunderland (H) - Premier League

Brentford (A) - Premier League

Wigan (H) - FA Cup

Wolves (A) - Premier League

Rotation will be important in the next few games. The run-in is getting much closer.

Who could come into the team?

After his winner on Tuesday night, Kai Havertz could start a second league game in a row, though it will be interesting to see whether he is utilised once again as a number 10 or goes back into a more familiar striker role.

Gabriel Jesus also has a claim to be starting after he scored the final goal in the win at Leeds.

Riccardo Calafiori has been the first-choice left back throughout the season, but Piero Hincapie has been pretty impressive recently and was arguably the player of the match against Chelsea in midweek, so Mikel Arteta has a decision to make on that.
