Newcastle United slumped to a 3-2 defeat against Brentford with their European hopes dangling by a thread as far as qualifcation via the Premier League is concerned.
[The Magpies went ahead on 24 minutes when Bruno Guimaraes' corner](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/newcastle-united-vs-brentford-live-33382271) was swung in from the left at the Gallowgate End with Sven Botman flicking home to put Newcastle 1-0 up.
But the Bees hit back when Vitaly Janelt headed home Dango Ouattara's left wing cross on 37 minutes. Ouattara caused more damage at the end of the half as he cut in past Kieran Trippier and attempted to tee up skipper Mathias Jensen before Jacob Murphy blocked with his arm.
Igor Thiago stepped up and sent Nick Pope the wrong way to put Brentford ahead for the first time. Bruno levelled up from the spout but Brentford won it as Ouattara arrowed home late on.
Here's how United fared against Brentford:
**Nick Pope 6**
Left exposed but still made three saves.
**Kieran Trippier 4**
Gave it his all and provided some dangerous crosses. But turned inside out by Ouattara for the first half penalty and caught out of possession as ex-Bournemouth man lashed home late on.
**Malick Thiaw 6**
Fought hard but part of a defence that conceded another three goals. Unlucky with shot that was saved expertly by Kelleher.
**Sven Botman 6**
Deserves credit for scoring the opener. But allowed Janelt to get ahead of him for the equaliser.
**Lewis Hall 7**
United's best by some margin. Newcastle didn't have enough on his level.
**Bruno Guimaraes 7**
An assist and the penalty to haul Newcastle level. Battled hard after injury but he can't do it all.
**Sandro Tonali 6**
Looked to pick holes in Brentford's defence. Did nothing to suggest his focus levels aren't where they should be.
**Joe Willock 5**
Struggled to make the same impact as in recent games. Just 13 passes and didn't have a shot. Offered zero threat. Taken off at the break.
**Harvey Barnes 5**
Drove one first half effort wide but missed great chance at the start of the second.
**Jacob Murphy 5**
A miserable half in truth. Best moment came when he drove the ball into the box and Bruno flicked wide. Handled in the box to give Brentford a penalty to pick up a booking. Hooked during the interval. The fact Elanga was warming up as the teams went off at the break suggested decision had already been made.
**Yoane Wissa 3**
Did not make the most of a golden chance to make it 2-0. That was his only shot with the striker managing just 17 touches in 64 minutes.
**Subs**
Anthony Elanga 5 (for Murphy 46)
Assisted for the penalty incident. Didn't do much else.
Nick Woltemade 6 (for Willock 46)
A few bright moments and at least showed fight by wanting the penalty.
William Osula 7 (for Wissa 65)
Made a positive impact. Big hand in the penalty incident.
Dan Burn (for Trippier 87)
Jacob Ramsey (for Tonali 87)
\*Subs must play 15 minutes to earn a mark
