The Newcastle player 'run ragged' and team-mate who was 'nowhere near' required level

NEWCASTLE (4-3-3):

4 Pope: Made a good first-half save from Outtara, but might well feel he should have done better when the winner went through his legs

3 Trippier: Was run ragged by the excellent Outtara – couldn’t match his opponent’s pace or aggression

5 Thiaw: Tried his best to hold things together and made a couple of decent blocks

4 Botman: Scored with a deft header, but lost Janelt for the first goal and looked ragged on a number of occasions

5 Hall: Gave his all, but was rushed on a number of occasions – finished off playing at right-back

5 Guimaraes: Tried to drive Newcastle forward and scored from the spot, but his game lacked composure

4 Tonali: Never looked like getting a grip off Brentford’ midfield – is being asked to do a defensive-midfield job that doesn’t really suit him

4 Willock: Another ineffective attacking performance in the first half saw him hauled off at half-time

3 J Murphy: Compounded a poor attacking display by conceding the penalty that enabled Brentford to claim the lead at the end of the first half

4 Wissa: Nowhere near the level that was required as he took on his former employers – his game is badly lacking in sharpness at the minute

5 Barnes: Flitted in and out of the game in the position he prefers but didn’t pose a sustained threat

Subs:

4 Woltemade (for J Murphy, 46): Slowed things up when the ball came to him in the second half

6 ELANGA (for Willock, 46): Added some urgency to Newcastle’s attacking – should have started after a bright midweek display

6 Osula (for Wissa, 65): Looked his side’s biggest threat in the closing stages, which says a lot about his fellow forwards

Burn (for Trippier, 87)

Ramsey (for Tonali, 87)

(not used): Ramsdale (gk), Shahar, A Murphy, Neave.

BRENTFORD (4-2-3-1):

Kelleher 6; Kayode 6, Ajer 6, van den Berg 6, Henry 7; Henderson 6 (Yarmoliuk 56, 6), Janelt 8; OUATTARA 9, Jensen 8 (Damsgaard 87), Lewis-Potter 7 (Donovan 79); Thiago 7.

Subs (not used): Valdimarsson (gk), Hickey, Pinnock, Nelson, Collins, Furo.

Man Of The Match: DANGO OUTTARA – The Brentford forward caused a series of problems with his pace and power.
