‘Proud’ Guglielmo Vicario highlights Tottenham’s biggest positive despite another loss

10-man Tottenham were beaten comfortably by Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Cristian Romero was sent off for a reckless challenge on Casemiro, as 10-man Tottenham Hotspur fell to a 2-0 defeat to a rejuvenated Manchester United side at Old Trafford.

The Spurs skipper’s red card in the 29th minute changed the dynamics of the game. Bryan Mbeumo scored minutes from a well-worked training ground set-piece, with Bruno Fernandes sealing the deal for Manchester United nine minutes from time.

Romero’s dismissal left his team in all kinds of problems. Before that, Tottenham actually looked in control of the game without possession, as Man United moved the ball from sideways to sideways and backwards. It was the compact shape, discipline and energy from the players that started frustrating Michael Carrick’s side.

Surprisingly, the Lilywhites showed defensive resilience and togetherness after going down to 10 men and had reasonable possession in the opening half-hour. However, they virtually created nothing of substance, with Dominic Solanke, Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert chasing shadows most of the afternoon.

Guglielmo Vicario proud of his Tottenham teammates for showing spirit and fight amid Tottenham’s defeat vs. Man United

It was only 2-0 against Man United, thanks to Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. The Italian made an impressive eight saves against United to help keep the scoreline respectable. He was the visitors’ best player on the afternoon, which shows how disappointing the north Londoners actually were.

Speaking in an interview with TNT Sports (h/t BBC Sport), Guglielmo Vicario admitted that he is proud of his teammates for their spirit, character, and work ethic, especially after being reduced to 10 men, as playing in a stadium like Old Trafford is not easy. He has urged his team to take the positives from the defeat and take them into Tuesday’s home game against Newcastle United.

“It is so tough. Especially when you come to play in a stadium like this one. But I am proud of my teammates because we showed a lot of resilience and hard work throughout the game. It is tough when you are one man less to try and overturn a result that is already 1-0.

“I am proud of my team-mates, so so proud, because they put all the character and effort in today and to do it 10 v 11 is a massive reward for what we want to show for our football club, for our fans and of course the result is another defeat which is tough to accept but today – we need to take the positive that can take us into Tuesday’s game.”

Things could get ugly in the upcoming fixtures

Tottenham host Newcastle United on Tuesday evening, looking to end a seven-match wait for a Premier League win. After that, they cross swords with bitter north London rivals Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Frank’s future is clearly on the line after the loss at Old Trafford, and if the hierarchy decides to keep him at the helm now, he certainly won’t be able to survive another poor result in the coming fixtures. Things are looking ominous for the Dane.
