Opinion: The four big winners and two unfortunate losers for West Ham as momentum shifts in…

West Ham United fans have just enjoyed their best weekend in a while following the 2-0 win over Burnley.

Indeed, only a matter hours after relegation rivals Nottingham Forest dropped points in the Premier League’s relegation battle, West Ham United cut the gap to safety to just three points.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side put in a fine display as West Ham United beat Burnley at Turf Moor thanks to goals from Crysencio Summerville and Taty Castellanos.

What a weekend 😍😍

That one felt big – how do you now feel about the relegation battle?! 🤔

It was a big result and puts huge pressure on Forest, while it also keeps Burnley way behind West Ham in the Premier League table.

Here, Hammers News looks at the West Ham winners and losers from the contest. Clearly, the win is a major boost for everyone at the club, but there are some who have unfortunately been negatively impacted by it on an individual basis.

Winners

Crysencio Summerville

Remember when the Dutchman was on a goal that spanned well over a year? That feels like a distant memory.

By netting the opener at Turf Moor, Summerville equaled a goalscoring record for West Ham.

The former Leeds star became the first player since Jesse Lingard to score in five consecutive games for the club, underlining just what a crucial player he is these days.

Even before Lucas Paqueta actually left West Ham, his match-winning form had deserted him.

Jarrod Bowen cannot do it all alone, so it’s fantastic to see Summerville continue to step up.

Mads Hermansen

It’d be fair to say that Mads Hermansen’s move to West Ham has not worked out just yet.

In fact, Hammers News understands that West Ham were open to selling Hermansen during the January transfer window.

He, however, stayed at the club and was brought back into the fold at Turf Moor.

Describe Mads Hermansen’s West Ham return in ONE word! 🧤

Mads Hermansen of West Ham United makes a save from Zian Flemming of Burnley during the Premier League match between Burnley and West Ham United at Turf Moor on February 07, 2026 in Burnley, England.

The Dane looked somewhat shaky in the opening exchanges but certainly grew into the game.

The irony is that for all of his struggles, Hermansen has kept both of West Ham’s clean sheets this season.

Nuno Espirito Santo

Nuno made some big calls here, such as starting Hermansen, Callum Wilson and Axel Disasi.

All of them paid off, to a certain degree. The Hammers boss has been questioned for his selections and in-game management at times, but he got it absolutely right in Lancashire in what could prove to be a pivotal weekend in the relegation scrap.

Credit where credit is due. Nuno took a risk and saw it pay off.

Taty Castellanos

Taty has proved impressive at West Ham, bringing energy to a forward line desperately lacking it before his arrival.

Still, there had been question marks as to whether the Argentine could score goals at Premier League level.

Though he’s still got a lot to prove on that front, his header from a superb Malick Diouf cross was one of supreme quality.

Losers

Pablo Felipe

Pablo Felipe has impressed during the early part of his career at West Ham and has certainly shown enough to suggest that he’s got a future at the club.

Still, the January signing was dropped and fellow new arrival Castellanos was deployed in a deeper role behind Callum Wilson.

Pablo usually plays there, but Castellanos put in a fine display and capped his performance off with a first Premier League goal.

There are only 13 games left to play and Wilson will surely feature in the bulk of them. If Saturday was anything to go by, Pablo faces a fight to get back into the team.

Jean-Clair Todibo

The fact that Axel Disasi made a quick-fire debut for West Ham against Burnley underlined just how pressing the need for a new central defender was in east London.

Though he wasn’t tested all too much, Disasi hardly put a foot wrong and it would seem unlikely that he’d drop out of the team any time soon.

He can only get fitter, after all.

With that in mind, it’s difficult to see Jean-Clair Todibo getting back into the side any time soon.

Suspended for the next two games anyway following his red card against Chelsea last weekend, Todibo might have played his way out of the side.
