Aston Villa boss Unai Emery says he "expects more" from Jadon Sancho. The Manchester United winger joined the Midlands side on loan for the season in the summer.

But he has endured a slow start to life with Villa. Sancho has scored just once, that goal coming in a Europa League victory against Turkish side Fenerbahce last month.

Sancho, 25, finally chalked up his first Premier League goal contribution at the weekend as he teed-up Morgan Rogers for Villa’s opener against Bournemouth. While Emery has claimed that he is improving, the Spaniard has said that he wants to see even more from the United forward.

He said: "Hopefully he is getting better and he can help us in this process like he is, getting better. I expect more from him, and because I am positive, hopefully he will give us it."

Sancho has spent the past few seasons away from Old Trafford, with the winger having taken in three separate loan spells. He was with former club Borussia Dortmund during the second-half of the 2023/24 season.

Sancho was then sent to Chelsea last term, with the Blues having agreed to a £25m obligation to buy, albeit the Blues paid £5m to back out of that agreement. Sancho's current United deal expires this summer and is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal with the Red Devils.

Elsewhere, Sancho is not the only one of his Villa stars that Emery has sent a message to. Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz re-joined the side on loan from Juventus in January despite reported interest from Chelsea.

Emery added: "Douglas Luiz, Onana, Barkley, and Bogarde have a huge responsibility to replace the injured players - McGinn, Tielemans and Kamara. Those three are here for a long time and were performing here in high demands being successful.

"Now Onana must be consistent, trying to avoid injuries. He played a fantastic match. We needed him from defensive set-pieces.

"After one year and a half away from here, Luiz is needed, to recover him doing the tasks in our demands. He improved from the first match, but there is still work to do to get his best.

"Barkley is a fantastic player and he is getting fit again. He is getting confidence and will be important for us. Bogarde is always versatile and helps us. To replace the players we had before, it is very important."
