Gloucester City defender Ben Richards-Everton has retired from professional football due to personal reasons.

The 34-year-old City player announced on Saturday morning that he was going to retire after a recurring injury that he had been dealing with over the last few years.

Richards-Everton joined the Tigers in 2023, before departing in March of the same season. He later returned in the summer of 2024 following the appointment of Mike Cook, where he had been an instrumental part of City’s defence.

City manager Daf Williams thanked the defender for his service to the club.

“Just gutting," Williams said. "But some things are more important than football, family, and health is one of them. So, he departs with our blessing, and we wish him all the very best.

“He's been fantastic for me on a personal level since I walked into the building in the summer; he's been class for me on and off the pitch, and I know he's been the same for the football club for the last couple of years.

“On behalf of everyone, we’re all gutted. But it's something that he feels is the best thing for him and the stage of his career and his life. Just a massive thank you to him personally.”

City hosted a memorial for him at the KMM Energy stadium where he got to say his final goodbye to the fans.
