‘Top team’ - Sunderland favourite makes Newcastle United claim after 92-year wait for win

Newcastle United latest news: Jordan Henderson has reacted to Brentford’s first ever Premier League win at St James’ Park.

The Bees were delivered an early setback in their hopes of securing their first Premier League win on Tyneside when Sven Botman headed home from Bruno Guimaraes’ looping corner. However, they reacted to that and levelled through Vitaly Janelt before Igor Thiago converted a penalty on the stroke of half-time to give the visitors the lead at the break.

When Guimaraes then himself converted from the spot in the 79th minute, it had appeared that, once again, the Brazilian had rescued at least a point for his team. However, to their credit, Brentford once again responded to that and took another lead, one they would this time hold onto, when Dango Ouattara smashed home after a swift break.

That win ensured that Newcastle United would end the day in the bottom half of the Premier League table and the same distance from the bottom three to Chelsea in fifth place. Brentford, meanwhile, sit seventh and level on points with reigning champions Liverpool, albeit having played a game more than Arne Slot’s side.

Whilst Newcastle United stew on a tenth Premier League defeat of the season and their fourth at St James’ Park, the Bees could celebrate ending a 92-year wait for a win on Tyneside. For Henderson, that victory would have tasted even sweeter as the former Sunderland man earned his 14th career win against the Magpies.

“We knew it was a big game for us,” Henderson told Sky Sports. “I can't remember the last time we won here so it was a big game to come here to try and put on a performance and get three points and I thought the lads were outstanding again.

“The whole game we dug in. We conceded early which we were disappointed with but I thought the reaction was top class. To go in at half time 2-1 we knew it would be difficult in the second half with the atmosphere, they are a top team but the lads dug in really well and deservedly got the three points in the end.”

Janelt, scorer of Brentford’s first goal at St James’ Park on Saturday evening, added: “Sometimes you have to dig in, especially when they come out flying in the second half. I think we did a great job in the first half to come back from 1-0 down at this ground is very difficult.

“We showed personality, did very well. As we knew, we lost a bit of control in the second half, it became an open game at 2-2 - we had a lot of chances to kill the game but we got it over the line.”

Newcastle United ended Saturday in the bottom half of the Premier League table and as close to the bottom three, ten points, to the top five of the division. A trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium awaits Howe’s side on Tuesday night before a break from league action when they play Aston Villa, again away from home, next weekend in the FA Cup.
