West Ham United are now just three points from safety after a 2-0 win over Burnley on Saturday afternoon
West Ham United made no mistakes on Saturday afternoon as they beat Burnley 2-0 at Turf Moor to boost their Premier League survival hopes.
The Hammers took the lead through Crysencio Summerville in the 13th minute with Valentin Castellanos doubling the lead on 26 minutes. West Ham never looked troubled after that with the Irons now winning three of their last four Premier League games.
Their only defeat in that run was a 3-2 loss against Chelsea, in a fixture they were leading 2-0 but could not see the game out. Up next is a home game against a resurgent Manchester United with every point precious as the Hammers look to avoid relegation.
They are just three points behind Nottingham Forest in 17th while they sit six points behind Leeds United, Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur. Palace have played one game fewer at the time of writing.
Burnley are on 15 points, eight behind West Ham while Wolves remain rock bottom on eight points after a 3-1 home defeat against Chelsea. The bottom two are all-but relegated but West Ham still have genuine hopes of getting out of the bottom three following their recent upturn in form.
“The boys did really, really well. They were committed, desire, organised, talent up front, nice goals, nice combinations and a clean sheet that makes us proud of the way we defend. Because I believe that everything starts from there. If we can fix it, then up front, we have talent that can help us,” said manager Nuno Espírito Santo as he hailed his players after the victory.
He added: “We knew how important it was to start the game well.
“From minute one, we were switched on, on the front foot, we press, we recover balls, we went. We didn't allow too many situations to Burnley. That makes a big difference, makes a big difference.
“Today, we managed the game well. It was a spell during the second half in the beginning that Burnley put us against the ropes, but then came our fans singing and helping us. I'm really happy for them to make this travel so far away on a rainy day and help us today.
“We cannot thank them enough. Let's try to put this energy into London Stadium on Tuesday.”
West Ham United next 5 games compared to relegation rivals
West Ham: Man Utd (H), Bournemouth (H), Liverpool (A), Fulham (A), Man City (H)
Nottingham Forest: Wolves (H), Liverpool (H), Brighton (A), Man City (A), Fulham (H)
Leeds United: Chelsea (A), Aston Villa (A), Man City (H), Sunderland (H), Crystal Palace (A)
Tottenham: Newcastle (H), Arsenal (H), Fulham (A), Crystal Palace (H), Liverpool (A)
The win over Burnley saw Summerville score for the fourth game running as the ex-Leeds man hits red-hot form at the right time for West Ham. He had yet to score in the Premier League this season before netting in the 2-1 win over Tottenham.
Nuno will hope to see the forward maintain that form for the next five games and beyond as West Ham fight to stay in the Premier League.
