Aston Villa player is 'exciting' with eye for goal as ex Rangers talent joins club known for…

The former Rangers talent has moved on from Aston Villa in a loan capacity.

A former Rangers talent has moved on to a new club on loan following time at Aston Villa.

The Light Blues lost Rory Wilson in his formative years as he started to show potential up front, as he moved south for Aston Villa. He has scored goals aplenty in the Villans youth ranks and Scotland youth team sides but now aged 20, is looking to take his first steps in senior football. The Premier League side were seeking a good loan for the former Rangers talent and they have found a landing spot in Sturm Graz.

Based in Austria, they have become renowned as a striker talent factory in recent seasons. Rasmus Hojlund, Mika Biereth, Emanuel Emegha and Kelvin Yeboah are some of the notable names to have been developed by Sturm Graz in recent seasons and now Sturm Graz are convinced Wilson can become the next success story.

Why have Sturm Graz signed Rory Wilson from Aston Villa?

Sporting Director Michael Parensen: “Rory Wilson is a highly talented young striker we've been following for some time. His strengths lie primarily in his play between the lines, his positioning in the penalty area, and his finishing, thus adding another dimension to our attack. We're looking forward to an exciting young player who will prove what he's capable of in the coming months.”

Wilson added that it was Max Johnston, Scotland international and Derby County right-back, who played a key role in convincing him on a move to Austria after he moved from Motherwell to Sturm Graz earlier in his career. He said: “I’ve heard a lot about Sturm through Max Johnston, a big club in Austria with great fans, where young players get a chance.

“So it was clear to me right away that I absolutely wanted to seize this opportunity. I’m really looking forward to getting to know the team and working hard together to win as many games as possible.”

Why did Rory Wilson leave Rangers?

Rangers’ head of academy at the time of Wilson’s exit, Craig Mulholland, made clear how keen the Light Blues were to keep in the in-demand forward. He said: "Rory is a young player who we have watched develop from a very young boy into a young man.

“He comes from a very strong family who support him exceptionally well and we wish him well on his journey. Although our preference was for Rory to continue his journey at Rangers, we also respect his decision. We can now see some exciting recruitment into the club with talented players domestically and cross-border choosing to join Rangers and we are pleased with our development in this area.”

After he signed a new deal at Aston Villa, academy manager Mark Harrison said: "‘We are delighted to have agreed a new contract with Rory. He has obviously got a proven track record of scoring goals at Academy level and we firmly believe that this will continue at senior level. Rory has always been very committed to his development and has shown that consistently throughout his time with us. He has undoubted potential, so we look forward to supporting him into transitioning into a first team player at Aston Villa FC."
