Sunderland and Arsenal make Liam Rosenior joke as Régis Le Bris' suffers triple injury concern…

The moments that mattered before, during and after Sunderland’s Premier League meeting with Arsenal

Sunderland arrived at the Emirates with the Premier League table offering clear context. Régis Le Bris’ side went into the weekend sitting in the top half on 36 points after 24 games, within touching distance of the European places, while Arsenal set the pace at the summit.

Across 90 minutes – and in the build-up and fallout around it – there were plenty of small details that shaped the night beyond the headline result. Here are the moments you might have missed before, during and after Sunderland’s trip to North London:

First league trip to Arsenal since 2017

It had been more than four years since Sunderland last played at the Emirates Stadium, when – as a League One side – they reached the quarter-finals of the League Cup before suffering a 5-1 defeat. Eddie Nketiah scored a hat-trick that night, with Nicolas Pépé and Charlie Patino also on the scoresheet against Lee Johnson’s side, while Nathan Broadhead netted for the Black Cats. Dennis Cirkin was an unnamed substitute on the bench and the only player from that squad to feature in Régis Le Bris’ matchday group on Saturday.

Sunderland’s last league visit to North London came in May 2017, when an Alexis Sánchez brace secured a 2-0 win for Arsenal against an already-relegated side. David Moyes’ team arrived after a difficult campaign, with Jordan Pickford in goal behind a defence including John O’Shea, Lamine Koné and Bryan Oviedo. Sebastian Larsson and Lee Cattermole anchored midfield, while Jermain Defoe led the line. Unfortunately, Sunderland are yet to win at the Emirates Stadium having come unstick against Mikel Arteta’s side.

Arsenal show class with Sunderland tribute

Ahead of kick-off, Arsenal marked the visit of Sunderland with a thoughtful gesture in the press box, paying tribute to the late Louise Wanless. Wanless, who previously worked as Sunderland’s media officer, was remembered with a framed photograph and a bouquet of flowers placed at a seat in the press room.

It was a small but meaningful moment that did not go unnoticed among those present, reflecting the close-knit nature of football’s media community and the respect Wanless continues to be held in across the game.

Sunderland name two new signings on bench against Arsenal

Régis Le Bris named an unchanged Sunderland side for the Premier League trip to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. There were two new faces on the bench, however, with goalkeeper Melker Ellborg and deadline-day arrival Nilson Angulo both included in the matchday squad.

Le Bris stuck with the same system and starting XI that had delivered an impressive win over Burnley on Monday night, with captain Trai Hume again reprising his hybrid role down the right. Angulo was in line to make his debut from the bench despite only arriving on Wearside on Thursday night. The Ecuador international had been playing regularly in Belgium this season, and Le Bris had no concerns over his match sharpness if called upon.

Enzo Le Fée caught by Kai Havertz and injury worries

Enzo Le Fée was caught by an arm from Kai Havertz and went down for a period of treatment around the 27 minute mark. There was no malice in the challenge – it appeared to be a natural movement – but it briefly raised injury concerns for Sunderland. Le Fée was able to continue after receiving attention. The stoppage allowed for a drinks break for both sides before play resumed with the scores still locked at 0-0.

At 69 minutes, Sunderland were handed an injury scare when Noah Sadiki appeared to pull up with a hamstring problem with the Black Cats trailing 2-0. Although he initially looked okay to continue, he was soon withdrawn and replaced by Geertruida as a precaution. Mukiele, who had started the game, then appeared to be struggling with a knock shortly afterwards, adding to the concern before play settled again.

Niall Quinn spotted watching Arsenal vs Sunderland

Niall Quinn was pictured watching Sunderland for the second game in a row. The former Black Cats striker had been at the Stadium of Light earlier in the week for the win over Burnley and was again in attendance in London on this occasion.

The trip carried added significance for Quinn, who began his playing career with Arsenal before going on to enjoy a memorable spell on Wearside, making it a meeting of two of his former sides.

Sunderland and Arsenal players and staff make Liam Rosenior joke

There was a light-hearted moment during the warm-up when both Sunderland and Arsenal players appeared to share a laugh at Liam Rosenior’s expense. With Kepa standing deep inside the Sunderland half as David Raya prepared to clip a long pass to him, one of the Black Cats’ coaches jokingly waved his arms for the goalkeeper to move back before pulling him in for a hug, smiling as the exchange unfolded.

The scene echoed a recent flashpoint involving Rosenior, who had publicly criticised Arsenal earlier in the week for what he described as a lack of respect during the warm-up ahead of Chelsea’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg at the Emirates. On that occasion, Rosenior was seen angrily remonstrating with Arsenal staff and players for encroaching into Chelsea’s half as the teams prepared for kick-off.
