Arsenal could pursue a deal for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali after the season, journalist Steve Kay has claimed.
The Gunners were linked with a surprise move for the Italy international during the final hours of the January transfer window, as they explored the market following an injury to Mikel Merino.
While talks between the camps failed to materialise, Tonali reportedly remains on Arsenal’s radar for the upcoming summer window, when Newcastle are expected to soften their stance on the midfielder.
The Magpies were reluctant to see Tonali leave mid-campaign, despite the Italian’s agents trying to drum up interest from Arsenal by offering the player late in the window.
Arsenal Remain Keen on Sandro Tonali

According to Kay, Arsenal are keen on bringing Tonali to the club this summer and appear very likely to pursue a deal when the market reopens.
The north London side could look to bolster their midfield further following last summer’s additions of Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard and Eberechi Eze.
Tonali has no shortage of Premier League suitors, with Manchester City and Chelsea also registering their interest, but appears to have earmarked Arsenal as his preferred destination.
Newcastle are in a strong negotiating position for Tonali, whose contract at St James’ Park runs until June 2029, with the club holding a 12-month extension.
The 'world-class' 25-year-old Italy international has been a key player for Eddie Howe’s side this season, featuring in all of Newcastle’s 25 Premier League games and making 22 starts.
Tonali’s exit after the season would represent another significant sale for Newcastle in the past 12 months, following Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool for a British record transfer fee of £125m in September.
Arsenal Confirm Summer Transfer
Mikel Arteta
Arsenal have confirmed they have reached an agreement to sign promising defender Daniel McCarron ahead of the summer.
Following a successful trial, the 16-year-old has signed a pre-contract agreement that will lead to him signing professional terms with the north London side.
A versatile centre-back, McCarron will join Arsenal from the Northern Irish club Dungannon Swifts and link up with the rest of the club’s new scholars in July.
His arrival follows the additions of youngsters Evan Mooney and Jaden Dixon, whose transfers were confirmed during the January transfer window.
