Newcastle United's players 'won't let go of anyone' as they rally around Eddie Howe amid increased criticism of the Magpies manager.

There were a smattering of boos for perhaps the first time in Howe's tenure inside St James' Park on Saturday night after a dismal defeat against Brentford left United without a Premier League win since January 7.

They have slumped to 12th in the table and are as close to the relegation zone as they are to qualifying for Europe. After a £250million summer spend, it's not where the fans, players or managers expected to be this season.

Howe has come under criticism from a section of the fanbase but Newcastle's squad is taking responsibility for the poor performances. Captain Bruno Guimaraes has spoken out on behalf of the dressing room to insist that inside the club they are together and united in their belief to turn the situation around.

The Brazilian returned to the starting XI after injury and grabbed a goal from the penalty spot, but couldn't inspire his side to victory. Afterwards, he took to social media to reveal the feeling inside the club in an emotional message to supporters.

“Delighted to be back almost three weeks after my last injury,” Guimaraes wrote. “I know, and we all know, our responsibility as players, and that things are not happening the way we would like.

“I believe that in these four years together, this is the first time we are going through a real dip in form. We have to work harder, because difficult moments are always opportunities for us to become better than we have ever been.

“There is still a lot ahead of us, but we are certain that inside our club, no one will let go of anyone, and we will give everything to enjoy better days.

“Special thanks to the club’s physios for getting me back fit in record time, as well as my staff for helping me return to the pitch as quickly as possible. Howay NUFC.”

Guimaraes' comments echoed those from Kieran Trippier in the immediate aftermath of the Brentford defeat. The experienced full-back fronted up to the TV cameras with an honest appraisal of where Newcastle are at.

Trippier told Sky Sports: "It's nothing about the manager. We need to take responsibility for the performances as the players. I'm not going down that route about the manager - I'd never do that."
