Leeds United supporters were shocked on deadline day to see Kalvin Phillips signing for Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United side as the midfielder attempts to resurrect his career.
When Phillips left Leeds to join Manchester City back in 2022, many supporters expected he would find himself back in Yorkshire before his career was over, but not many would have predicted that the Leeds academy graduate would end up in South Yorkshire rather than West Yorkshire.

Phillips was linked with an emotional return to Leeds in January; however, a move never materialised, and now the midfielder finds himself back in the Championship.
This is something that has not just left supporters scratching their heads, with a former Leeds manager also having his say on the situation.

With the likes of Ilia Gruev impressing in the heart of Leeds’ midfield, there was never a need for the 49ers to go out and secure Phillips’ services just for him to end up warming the bench at Elland Road.
Nevertheless, former Leeds boss Grayson had his say on the situation when writing in The Football League Paper.
“As a Leeds fan, I’d seen Kalvin flourish under the management of Marcelo Bielsa.
“If you’d have told me four years ago that Phillips would be back in the Championship at 30, I’d have said you were mad.”
It is hard to believe that in what should be his prime years, the former England player of the year finds himself listening to instructions from Chris Wilder as opposed to Marcelo Bielsa or Pep Guardiola.

Data suggests Ethan Ampadu is similar to a prime Kalvin Phillips
Although his career may have tapered off, Phillips was absolutely exceptional for Leeds in their promotion-winning season from the Championship, as well as their first campaign back in the top flight.
Nowadays, it is Ampadu who breaks up the play in the middle of the park before spraying the long passes forward.
Both men effectively do the same job for Leeds, and the data suggests that they both perform quite similarly.

With Ampadu being just 25, there is still plenty of time for him to grow and develop and even surpass Phillips as a player, and it will be up to the 49ers to ensure they continue to strengthen the side so they are not forced to sell Ampadu the way Leeds ultimately had to let Phillips leave.
